Give the Product Away | Gillette

Give the Product Away | Gillette

Have you ever heard of a business that became a giant by giving its product away for free?

The Razor Revolution: one razor changed the game forever.

In the early 1900s, King C. Gillette had a revolutionary idea. a safety razor that didn’t need constant sharpening. But convincing men to switch from their trusted cut-throat razors was no small feat. Instead of selling, Gillette gave the razors away for free. Within weeks, thousands of men had switched and quickly realized they needed replacement blades. The rest is history: Gillette cornered the market by selling blades at a premium, turning a giveaway into a lifetime revenue stream.

Moral: Sometimes, the fastest way to gain customers is by removing barriers to entry. Give value first, and they’ll keep coming back.

Marketing Definition Embedded: This is the "razor-and-blade" model, where a core product is given at a low or no cost to drive sales of complementary goods.
