Give away power to empower others

Give away power to empower others

If you are in a leadership role, you have power over someone. To accomplish great things, and to see others accomplish greatness, you need to give that power away. In the context of your work team, think about creating and providing engaging experiences for them. You can do this in three ways:

  1. Create a context that nurtures an environment of generosity, accountability, and commitment. Inside and outside their roles, create opportunities for your people to do things for each other and to recognize each other.
  2. Initiate conversations that shift people's experiences away from power struggles - clamoring for personal recognition, highlighting others' shortcomings, etc. - and toward a sharing of power. A question for everyone to always ask is, How are you elevating the people around you?
  3. Foster a culture where people always listen and pay attention to those around them. More than exchanging information to get stuff done, really listen to understand what drives people or holds them back - and then take that knowledge to set them up for success.
