GitHub Copilot: Supercharge Your Coding with AI Assistance

?? Hey Folks! I'm thrilled to share my first LinkedIn article with you all. Today, I want to talk about an amazing tool that has transformed the way I write code: GitHub Copilot.

As a developer, I want to share my personal experience and thoughts on GitHub Copilot.

It all began when I was constructing my portfolio website in TypeScript with three.js. During my search for helpful extensions for TypeScript, I came across GitHub Copilot, which had been on my to-do list for quite some time. So, I decided to give it a chance.

Meanwhile feel free to explore my portfolio website at anandchapla.com. As of now, please note that the 3D content on the website is not supported on mobile devices. Kindly use a laptop or MacBook to fully enjoy the experience. However, I promise it will be worth it and amaze you!

Back to topic, GitHub Copilot was launched a couple of years ago. However, at the present, I am finding the best opportunity to explore new tools to incorporate into my life.

It is powered by OpenAI Codex to work in real time, right from your editor. Personally, I love using VS Code, but it also offers support for other popular editors. GitHub Copilot provides suggestions for numerous languages and a wide variety of frameworks, but works especially well for Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby, Go, C# and C++.

GitHub Copilot has become an indispensable companion in my coding journey. It's like having an intelligent coding partner right at my fingertips. The moment I started using Copilot, I immediately noticed its potential to accelerate my productivity and streamline my coding process.

In the past 10 days GitHub Copilot has accounted for more than 15% of my coding. It consistently suggests the next statement and even entire functions on numerous occasions.

As developers, we frequently find ourselves rewriting small sections of code. This often involves variable reassignment, statement reordering, or extracting logic into separate methods. Traditionally, we would copy and paste code and then make the necessary modifications. However, GitHub Copilot has been incredibly helpful in such situations, as it suggests precisely what I want to achieve.

It has the capability to write tests, generate functions from comments and vice versa, write documentation for code, create SQL queries, and even generate classes from SQL. These are just a few of its use cases, but as you start using it, you will discover that it can do much more than that.

These are the findings from research on GitHub Copilot:

  • 74% of developers reported being able to focus on more satisfying work.
  • 88% of developers felt more productive.
  • 96% of developers found that they were faster with repetitive tasks.

Now, let's discuss the pricing aspect because great things often come at a small cost. When you start using GitHub Copilot for Individual, the first month is free. Afterward, it will cost $10 per month or $100 for the year. I find this pricing quite convenient. If you spend more than 4 hours coding or have a monthly salary of over 1 lakh, I highly recommend opting for it. Not only will it cover its own cost, but it will also help you achieve the same results in less time, allowing you to focus on the things you love. However, everyone has different opinions based on their experiences and personal choices.

Now, without wasting any more time, I insist on installing the extension right away and experiencing the power of AI.

Note: Please keep in mind the privacy policy before installing the extension in your company or organization's editor. Github copilot for business is also available.
