GIRL POWER: England Women’s team crowned Euro 2022 champions

The hungry Lionesses have won their first major trophy, beating Germany 2-1 in extra time at Wembley Stadium…

The historic victory is the first major trophy for English football since the men’s team won the 1966 World Cup — also against Germany.

Chloe Kelly, who came on in the 64th minute, scored the winning goal just 10 minutes from the end of extra-time. "This is unreal. This is what dreams are made of," Kelly told BBC Sport moments after the final whistle.

"It's unbelievable. To be here and score the winner. These girls are special, this manager is special. This is amazing. I just want to celebrate now."

The Lionesses will celebrate their success in front of fans at Trafalgar Square today (1 August), with the event broadcast live on BBC One from 12:40.

Looking forward, as we always should in sport, the question is: How can England build on this triumph?

Obviously, as a team, all eyes will be on the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. But, this is a bellwether moment for the women’s game. It’s a chance to inspire the next generation, and put women's football front-and-centre amid what is already a rich and passionate football culture in the UK.

Women's clubs are popping up left, right and centre, so the key now is to ensure they survive and grow. And, as we all well know, grassroots football in the UK is only as strong as its community and its people. So that’s where the focus should be.
