The girl being dragged under a car: A system failure?

The night of celebration which turned into a nightmare for a girl. While the 4 men in the car should not get away, but what it shows is the gross neglect on both the part of the perpetrators and also the system. The incident shows a larger issue to correct.

The 4 factors which led to this incident:

Drinking and driving by the 4 men who drove the car

None of them had a license to drive

The police response time to the crime: a milkman called the police at 3.30am that a car was dragging the girl on the scooter-the police physically responded at 5.30am

The girls on the scooter were without helmets

The systematic issue is that this would have happened like a normal day, if this incident wouldn’t have happened, with drivers without licenses drinking and driving, response time of police to a reported crime , and riders on scooters without helmets,

While the case goes on, the bigger issue to fix would be the monitoring mechanism of people on the road, and commuters having a genuine fear that they cannot get away if they flout the rules.

The fact is that people know they can get away most times, unless social media or the media highlights it. Like the passenger on the Air India flight urinating on a 70 year old lady, which is the most bizarre act to have come across in a long time.

People like to flout rules and know they can get away. That’s the issue to be fixed and that comes with fixing the processes and SOPs and putting accountability on the people managing it.

In Mumbai with strict enforcements on drinking and driving for the past few years, people think ten times before doing it. That’s probably the way forward at Delhi.

And all this in Delhi . Given the road safety situation, all concerned authorities should be on an overdrive exploring & running all possible security solutions, even simultaneosly from across the globe, using best technology .. getting AI innovators, think tanks to create & test pilots. Pull in tech giants, intelligence experts. Et al so that such incidents never happen again.
