There is a real danger that data science in the public sector will suffer from the ‘garbage in, garbage out’ issue. Current debates are around ‘getting data use right’, for example with respect to the accountability of algorithmic decision-making or potential surveillance of citizens. But, more fundamentally, as Tobias Polzer , Axel Polleres , Hannes Leo and Claudia Wutscher explain, there is also a need to get the data supply right as a prerequisite for data science. To get the data supply right, they present four interrelated challenges that need to be addressed and how to address them.
