Gigi & Nate (Movie)

Since it rained and we had planned to go to Knoebels Amusement Resort , my wife asked if the rest of the family wanted to take in a movie. Seemed like there wasn't much to choose from; so we settled on "Gigi & Nate". I asked, "What is it about". She said, "it's about a boy and his service monkey." I thought to myself, "since when do monkeys serve as service animals." I must admit that I was not open-minded about seeing this movie, we usually go for animated features or comedies. So, with that in mind, we set off to see "Gigi & Nate"

The film opens with our introduction to Nate, his sister and his mother. Flashback to when Nate is dared to jump off a cliff into a pool below. After some delay, he does a back flip and is cheered on by his friend. Later, he meets a local and invites her, along with his sister and boyfriend. Nate starts to experience seizures and is rushed to the local hospital; later ending up in his hometown hospital of Nashville, TN. After all the tests are done, it is discovered that Nate has meningitis. Meningitis is nothing to mess around with; Nate ends up being paralyzed and cannot fend for himself.

Break away later in the film and Nate is now living in a specially designed building. He has to be fed, clothed and bathed with assistance. At one point, he tries to kill himself, only to be saved by his father - played by Jim Belushi - pretty good too. Nate is feeling pretty low at this point and is in need of something... so enter Gigi. Gigi is a capuchin monkey. Finally, after several days of staying in her cage, Gigi comes out and starts to take to Nate. Then comes a long, drawn out battle from an Animal Rights organization, hell bent on making sure Gigi is not a public health hazard. In the end, the Animal Rights organization wins and Gigi is taken away from Nate. So, we know that can't be the end, right? So, the end up moving to N. Carolina, where it's not against the law to have a monkey that is a service animal.

What did I learn from this? I learned that you best enjoy what you have now, because you do not know what is right around the corner. One thing is for sure, I'll keep an open mind when going to the movies. It's ok to get out of my comfort zone - well, at least every so often... See this movie if you can... it will make you feel good.

BTW - Also big shout out to Warehouse Cinemas - Our go to family friendly theater.

Thank you for joining us, Doug. You never know how art and film will inspire you.
