#GiftofSight Challenge
Dr Johann Krüger
Founder and medical director of the Tygervalley Eye and Laser Centre. Leading ophthalmic surgeon in Cape Town. Qualified at Stellenbosch Health Sciences, College of Medicine SA & FRCSEdin
VISION 2020: The Right to Sight was launched in 1999. It sought to promote: “A world in which nobody is needlessly visually impaired, where those with unavoidable vision loss can achieve their full potential.”
The Global Initiative was set up to: “Intensify and accelerate prevention of blindness activities so as to achieve the goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2020.”
Dr Johann Krüger, leading Ophthalmologist at the Tygervalley Eye & Laser Clinic, has been supporting the Right to Sight movement since the start, by offering his services for free to perform several cataract operations yearly during the International Eye Care Week in October.
Some of these patients have been on waiting lists for cataract surgery at state hospitals for years. The Khangella Eye Theatre at The Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre offered its theatre facilities free of charge and other companies sponsored the intra-ocular lenses and other materials and eye drops that are used during the procedure.
Dr Johann Krüger and one of his patients, Marinda de Vos, formed the Gift of Sight Trust, in an effort to work together to eliminate avoidable blindness in those who need it most.
This year, they will host their 4th Annual Gift of Sight Golf Day on the 06th September at the King David Mowbray Golf Club.
In line with the World Sight Day initiative, the #GiftofSight challenge will be to raise additional funds, so that Dr Johann Krüger can extend a hand of help to even more people in need of help and support The Global Action Plan on Universal Eye Health (GAP)
