The Gift of Quality Feedback

Recently, I had the opportunity to reconnect with a former mentee. Over a virtual lunch we shared updates on our families, talked about our recent travels, our mutual love for all things chocolate, and of course, work. She shared that she was considering resigning. Hearing that from this capable, insightful professional took me by surprise.???
From previous conversations, I knew she loved her role--one she felt allowed her to align her personal and professional passions. She had participated in a number of high-visibility projects and created a support network of peers and leaders. So, why, now, was she considering resignation? The answer: she had been blindsided by her performance review. Her specific words were: “I’d never heard some of that feedback before. I had no clue I wasn't performing to the expected standard. In all honesty, I didn’t even know what the standard was. I still don’t.” Needless to say, our reconnection lunch evolved into a two-hour coaching session. And we collaborated on a way forward. ??
This young professional’s dilemma is not unique to her or her organization. In The Waymakers book, I share how surprisingly frequent it is that employees do not receive the specific, actionable feedback they need when they need it. And how, for employees on spectrums of difference like my former mentee—an intelligent, driven woman of color—not getting feedback is more the norm than not and can cause significant professional harm.???
No one fulfills their potential without understanding what they’re doing well and what they could be doing better. So why do leaders continue to withhold such critical information? How can we embrace quality feedback instead? How can we leverage it to lead differently in the future so that every one has what’s needed to meet?goals, achieve professional aspirations, and drive better business value for organizations? Today, I’m inviting you to do just that.???

1 年At any point in all lives, each person may require guidance from a subject matter expert, manager, mentor, or even a peer who seems to have caught on. I vowed early on that I’d be available as a mentor because I was too often deemed unworthy. In predominantly caucasian schools I wasn’t supposed to want more or to strive toward growth; I was made aware that I couldn’t be the face of “the franchise” and, as such, should not be encouraged to hold titles. I was, essentially, born to be lead or left to fend for myself. ?? It is heartbreaking that there are many people in positions to foster growth and awareness who, instead, spend their energy assessing who’s worthy of feedback. For the “unworthy”, it’s is often referred to as “handholding”. In these cases, the leader displays resentment towards the person they’re assigned to lead, assuming the task to be unduly burdensome. In one’s management career, feedback is not a privilege but rather a necessity in environments where universal corporate objectives and assigned team roles exist. It’s not a reflection of class, status, or competency. It’s required by assignment or assumed leadership as guidance and alignment toward higher versions of performance.

1 年Absolutely agree! I've been there, and it can be frustrating. Clear and honest feedback is a game-changer for personal and professional growth. Let's be mindful and help each other succeed! ?????
I completely resonate with the frustration of receiving vague feedback that leaves you uncertain about your progress and growth. In the same vein, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have long recognized the importance of specific and empowering support for their students. They champion financial literacy, scholarships, career opportunities, internships, eSports, resume-building experience, workshops inclusion, entrepreneurship, and support for underserved communities. To further strengthen these efforts, let's collaborate to establish mentorship programs connecting HBCU students with industry professionals, provide targeted resources for financial literacy and career development, and offer workshops that foster a culture of constructive feedback and growth. Together, we can create a more inclusive and financially literate society by empowering individuals to thrive and excel in their chosen paths.

1 年Tara - If all managers/leaders could go through extensive training on giving and receiving timely feedback, we would have a workforce that feels far more valued and acknowledged than what they do now. Yes, feedback is difficult to deliver and receive at times. However, it is what's needed, and to your point, it must be delivered in a timely manner.
