I've got a secret to share with you.

The best ideas have come to me because I was not at the center of the activity. The absence of some things highlights the presence of others… this is what allows me to see vividly.?

Actually, how I landed on my 25-year mission of being the world-renowned coach of Modern Badasses (and those who lead them) is because I was playing a game and was out of action from very early on. I saw things being on the outside that wouldn't have been available to me on the inside.

How? This is best understood within the context of negative space. Negative space is a concept in art and is the area around and between subjects. It allows you to appreciate or see the subject (positive space). In some cases, negative space can be more interesting than the subject. This image is an excellent example.

It would be easy to believe that that is a black abstract image. When you look at it closely, however, it shows two profiles of people about to exchange a kiss. The negative space, in this case, is the subject even though the initial impression is that the black image is the subject.

Why does this matter?

A Modern Badass's gift is helping you see the beauty of negative space.?My gift is to see the gift of the Modern Badasses and be their champion. I want to help people see Modern Badasses in a whole new light instead of the initial, superficial impression that they may be "difficult" or "toxic" (or much worse).

There’s never a positive without a negative. There’s never bright without dark. We need negative and positive as well as bright and dark to see balance in a composition.?

Our problem as leaders is that we like the sugar high of positive space. We keep gorging on it. We lack balance and it makes us miss content, context, texture, connection and understanding.?

I am a champion for Modern Badasses because they bring negative space into the conversation. They keenly know and feel negative space everywhere. So their negative space advocacy means there's a desire to go deeper so that we don't discard ideas or opportunities so quickly.

By sticking to the sugar high of positive space, we are costing ourselves innovation, creation, connection, health and humanity.?
