The world is not a utopia so there will always be people and causes that will need our help. Supporting a charity brings a feeling of self-satisfaction that is empowering and fulfilling. It is an act of pure generosity that demonstrates the passion we have for great causes which is infectious to the people around us. It feels good to give, to believe in something and to help others because it directs our moral compass and strengthens our social connection.
Giving to others can be reinvigorating and can give us the inspiration to get through a bad day. Taking our self out of the equation and focussing on other’s needs is important to see the reality of our own situation objectively. Time and money are essential to charities and our efforts are magnified threefold by the recipients of our gifts. This positive affirmation of who we are is a mood-booster because we can all make a positive change in the world, one charitable step at a time.
As the old-adage goes, it is better to give than receive and so by acting out of moral duty and a feeling of responsibility we are cementing our own personal values and our opinion of our self. In turn, freely giving enables us to lead by example and show others everything that we can do to make a difference. We find people who are like-minded in supporting charities with the same ethical beliefs as us and this makes us feel united.
The sensation of pleasure that we feel in giving is in the depths of our physiology and triggered by a response in the reward centre of our brains. For all these reasons I donate, have volunteered and worked for charities for 17 years as well as now embarking on my own start-up business. Having a strong sense of giving has been carried with me into my business mindset and I offer as much as I can to my networking community with a feeling of personal gratification. My invaluable charity experience has also taught me many life lessons and even more about myself than I could have imagined without it.
