Gift and Art

Both giving and receiving feedback are important and require skill and openness.

Giving feedback effectively is an art because it involves finding the right balance between providing constructive criticism and being supportive. Effective feedback also requires clarity, empathy, and a focus on the behavior or action, rather than the person.

?

Receiving feedback is equally important because it allows us to learn and grow. Receiving feedback as a gift means approaching it with an open mind and a willingness to learn from others. This involves listening actively, asking questions to clarify feedback, and acknowledging areas for improvement. People who are open to feedback are more likely to be successful in their careers as they can continuously improve and develop their skills.

Constructive feedback:

Giving constructive feedback can be challenging as it requires providing criticism in a way that is helpful, clear and non-judgmental.

Here are some tips for giving constructive feedback:

?

1. Be specific: State the specific behavior or action you want to address, rather than making generalizations.

2. Focus on the issue, not the person: Discuss the behavior, situation, or result, not the person's character, ability or personality.

3. Adapt the discussion to the individual's communication style and personality: the conversation has to reflect that it is about helping the individual improve and become a better professional.

4. Use the coaching model: After identifying the issue, use the coaching model to help the person develop their own plan to improve.

5. Recognize their strengths: Acknowledge what the person does well, then provide specific feedback about areas for improvement.

6. Be timely: Provide feedback shortly after the incident or situation occurred while details are fresh in everyone's mind.

7. Listen actively: Encourage the person to ask questions, then listen attentively to understand their perspective and provide clarification when needed.

8. Focus on future performance: Provide feedback about how the person can do better in the future, rather than dwelling on past mistakes. And schedule a follow-up discussion to assess what was implemented from the discussion and the result.

Effective feedback can motivate and inspire people to do better, resulting in improved performance and better relationships.

It requires empathy, excellent communication skill and a relationship based on trust- those around you have to know that you have their best interest in mind. It is about helping them improve and grow as professionals.

?Feedback is essential for personal and professional development.
