Google IO 2023 Unveils Game-Changing AI Breakthroughs: From Bard AI to MusicLM and More!?

Google’s I/O 2023 just took place, and it was all about AI. Google has just unveiled some exciting and groundbreaking breakthroughs in artificial intelligence that will take generative AI capabilities to the next level. Let's take a closer look at some of the highlights:?

Google Search?

Google Search is about to get enhanced with generative AI, and it will be able to synthesize search results from complex queries. It should allow users to ask follow-up questions and show clearly where the information comes from.???

Labs users should be able to try this new feature in the coming weeks. It is unclear, though, when it will be available to everyone.?

Bard AI?

Google's answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT is here, and it's called Bard. What's great about Bard is that there is no waitlist, and you can start using it right away. Unfortunately, EU countries are not included, and Google didn’t comment on when EU users should be able to try Bard.

Bard has a range of impressive features, including the ability to browse the internet, search photos, and supports over 20 programming languages. Plus, you can use it with other apps, such as Gmail, Docs, and Spreadsheets.?

Bard Plugins?

Unlike ChatGPT Plugins, Bard Plugins are available to everyone. With Bard, you can now get instant access to a range of plugins, including OpenTable, Kayak, Spotify, Walmart, and Indeed. This seems to put Google ahead of OpenAI in the game.?

AI-powered Gmail?

Google has introduced "Help me write" in Gmail, which is about to revolutionize email writing forever. With AI-powered Gmail, you can simply write a one-line prompt, and AI will generate the whole email for you in just seconds. You can then refine your emails, change the tone, and more.?

Google Photos?

Google Photos now has a "Magic Editor" feature that lets you edit your photos like a pro. You can change the lighting of a scene, get rid of unwanted elements, adjust your position in the photo, and more.?

MusicLM?

Google's MusicLM generates songs based on your requests, and it's simply mind-blowing. The music industry will never be the same again.?

PaLM 2?

PaLM 2 is Google's new state-of-the-art language model, which has better multilingual and reasoning capabilities and is more compute-efficient than its predecessor PaLM. It has been trained on over 100 languages and comes in four different sizes, with the largest model boasting 10 trillion parameters.?

With 15 products that serve 4 billion people and over 6 million businesses every day, Google's latest AI features promise to change the way we work, collaborate, create, and travel.

Apple reportedly works on an AI-powered Health Coach "Quartz"?

Apple is reportedly about to enter the artificial intelligence race with their latest innovation, the AI-powered health coach codenamed "Quartz". As Bloomberg uncovered, this digital coach will help users improve their habits, stay motivated, and even understand their moods and emotions. By leveraging AI and data from Apple Watch, the health coach will provide personalized suggestions and coaching programs based on the user's specific needs.?

Let’s see what Apple unveils at their long-awaited Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5.??

ChatGPT is liberalizing EdTech?

OpenAI's ChatGPT has become a popular chatbot for students seeking help with their studies. Just ask ChatGPT to explain to you the history of the industrial revolution as it would to a 6-year-old.???

However, as more and more students turn to AI for learning, the traditional model of education is being disrupted. While this undoubtedly brings risks regarding information accuracy, it also liberalizes access to EdTech because ChatGPT can be used for free.?

Chegg, an EdTech company that provides homework help and textbook rentals, seems to illustrate that paid EdTech services may have to bring significant innovation to keep up. Chegg's stock dropped -50% after their CEO admitted that their business was becoming obsolete.??

IBM plans to refocus its workforce in response to AI advancements.?

IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, has announced one of the largest workforce strategies in response to the rapidly advancing technology. IBM continues hiring for software development and customer-facing roles but plans to slow hiring for back-office functions, such as human resources.??

The reason is that Krishna believes mundane tasks such as providing employment verification letters or moving employees between departments will likely be fully automated. This should free up human resources for more complex and strategic work, such as evaluating workforce composition and productivity, which Kirshna does not see automated over the next decade.??

Overall, IBM continues to grow and expand its workforce. This supports the fact that rather than replacing people, AI allows them to work more efficiently alongside the newly adopted technology.??

It’s getting personal: Meet Pi, the chatty chatbot that “listens”.?

Inflection AI, which was co-founded by the creators of Linkedin and DeepMind, has unveiled its “personal intelligence” chatbot Pi.??

Unlike ChatGPT, Pi is designed to be friendly and make you open by asking follow-up questions. Give Pi a try to talk about how stressful your day was or what to cook for dinner.??

?While it’s all fun and games now, Inflection AI intends to enhance Pi with real-time content, share links, and eventually integrate with your calendar, email, and other documents to help you better manage your time.

The company has raised $225 million in funding to date, so investors seem to see a future in AI-driven personal assistance.??

AI godfather quits Google to speak freely about the dangers of AI.?

With AI innovations popping up every week, the careful voices are also getting louder. Dr Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the godfather of AI, has quit Google, citing concerns over the impact of AI on society. It is believed that the approach he pioneered led the way for current systems such as ChatGPT.??

As with any technology, generative AI could be exploited by ‘bad actors’. Hinton expressed concerns over the possible flood of misinformation, AI’s potential to upend the job market and the risk of creating true digital intelligence.

He quit Google to speak freely about the dangers of AI, joining some other prominent AI researchers who call for a careful evaluation of the technology’s impact before giving it to the hands of the wide public.??

Walmart is using AI to negotiate deals?

Walmart has implemented an AI chatbot Pactum AI to streamline supplier negotiations, resulting in an average cost savings of 3%. The AI chatbot has proved popular with suppliers, with three out of every four reportedly preferring to negotiate with AI over human representatives.?
