Giant Steps

Giant Steps

Last year I wrote a book. Here it is with download links: Tangerine Media Innovation Spec 2018. Chapter 3 of the book is a specification for software developers that I give away for free to the world. It represents Generation 2 of drawing-model fusion. Gen2 (like Gen1) promises a real improvement for AEC users in a very critical area: knowledge transfer, development of understanding.

Knowledge transfer through drawing media and model media is now subject to significant amplification, through, first, fusion of those two media, and second, ...the forthcoming evolution in the form of drawing itself, once it resides (as it now does) in-situ within models.

The latter, a complete rethink of the FORM that drawing takes -- following from better understanding of the function of drawing (what it is, its purpose), and drawing's presence (in its new form) WITHIN models (of any kind) -- is described in detail in the book, which is free for anyone to use as they wish in software development.

This new form, and the evolution in media that it brings, will have its impact also on automation processes, for reasons I mention here: Tangerine Media / Cognitive Computing.

This year, among other things, I'm working on a new book. It's going to expand on these ideas with case studies, and an analogy made to music, where, just as everywhere else, understanding happens through this SEPARATION INTO THINGS THAT ARE DIFFERENT, and their subsequent BEING BROUGHT BACK TOGETHER.

When this is done right, it resonates. This is the same with thinking of any kind. Thinking happens, and understanding grows, in this interplay where apartness/distinction is made, and then resolved by "bringing together". The dynamic is fundamental, but it has to be done right. “Doing it” (pulling apart, seeing in different ways, then resolving, integrating, bringing together) is pre-requisite, but "doing it right" is what makes the difference.

And so it is with music also. Tangerine's new book project will connect these ideas to the greatest musicians who've shown how this is done: https://youtu.be/62tIvfP9A2w ("The most feared song in Jazz"): Making sense of John Coltrane's Giant Steps.
