Giacometti at Tate Modern
Giacometti at Tate Modern Tate Modern presents the UK’s first major retrospective of Alberto Giacometti for 20 years.
Celebrated as a sculptor, painter and draughtsman, Giacometti’s distinctive elongated figures are some of the most instantly recognizable works of modern art. This exhibition reasserts Giacometti’s place alongside the likes of Matisse, Picasso and Degas as one of the great painter-sculptors of the twentieth century.
Through unparalleled access to the extraordinary collection and archive of the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti, Paris, Tate Modern’s ambitious and wide-ranging exhibition brings together over 250 works. It includes rarely seen plasters and drawings, which have never been exhibited before, and showcases the full evolution of Giacometti’s career across five decades, from early works such as Head of a Woman [Flora Mayo] 1926 to iconic bronze sculptures such as Walking Man I 1960.
On the edge of madness: the terrors and genius of Alberto Giacometti.
He drank with Sartre, mocked Picasso and took silent walks with Beckett – but his work was going nowhere until a vision on Boulevard Montparnasse left him trembling. Ahead of a major Tate show, we explore the obsessions of Giacometti.
Swiss artist, Alberto Giacometti, had a distinctive style of painting, drawing and sculpture. Through his long, lean subjects and forms, and with his rough sketch work and sculpting technique, Giacometti established a look of his own. Although, his work was scrutinized and considered more expressionist than surrealist, Giacometti played a major role in the development of the Surrealist movement. His work "L'Homme qui marche I" set a record at Sotheby's, London, where it was sold for £65 million (US$104.3 million).
Many works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'L'homme au doigt' sold at Christie's New York 'Looking Forward to the Past' in 2015 for $141,285,000. There have been numerous articles about Alberto Giacometti, including 'Giacometti sculpture, Picasso painting poised to break auction records' written by David Ng for Los Angeles Times in 2015.
