Ghosting

No alt text provided for this image

I’m too old to have experienced ‘ghosting in the dating world’ and ok, I may not have replied to a few texts in the past but let’s please get rid of ghosting in the marine recruitment world. We are in a professional industry where reputations are made and lost in a heartbeat, don’t be one of those people who just disappear.?We live in a modern age where we’re glued to our phones and it is easy to see when someone has read a message; just spend 5 seconds replying or withdrawing if you are no longer interested in a role.

Why are crew ghosting yachts and recruiters?

You never know when you will run into that Captain or Chief Stew or that crew agent you ghosted – think carefully before you do it next time.

If you find yourself in a position when you look to turn down a job, use one of the many platforms you used to find that job such as phone, email, Whatsapp, website, or any Instant Messenger.??Something as simple as ‘sorry, I believe the role is not for me but keep me in mind for other roles’ is far more professional than deadly silence.

We are all busy but sending a reply in a timely manner is simply good etiquette. *

Let’s keep ghosts for Halloween, not your career.

*Disclaimer – apologies to anyone I may owe a reply to!

I believe this works both ways - from my perspective, for instance, I've heared dead silence hundreds of times when I sent an email about a specific vacancy (not from Wilson Halligan though ;) ), not even a confirmation that my message reached its recipient, but I always try to reply for any message sent my way, just because of good manners. Others might not be as patient, and just because they get frustrated, they stop replying for offers they are not interested in, as they dont get reply for their messages as well. Unfortunatelly, in this "battle" over replying for someones messages, only the jobseekers will loose :) . We all should take time to understand the "other side" - agents get burrowed in tonnes of emails from jobseekers everyday (I tend to see over 100 candidates reply to vacancy posted 5 minutes earlier on yotspot for instance) and might not see particular message, and on the other side there are people who would like to feel, that they are actually generating some interest with their messages, otherwise they shut themselve down for any further contact :)

It's high time for people to understand how it feels to be on the other side, keeping people on read doesn't give a good impression, be it anyone. Good or bad , agree or disagree atleast be kind enough to reciprocate.Great post Liam!!
