Ghosting

A few months ago, I told the team at Logitalent that we were entering the era of "Candidates Behaving Badly" and that we all needed to prepare for it. A huge component of that is when candidates ghost us, so the first part of my message is directed at them.

The opportunity we were considering you for was taken by another candidate of ours. It gave them a significant pay raise, greater benefits, more time off and terrific career advancement opportunities.

Ghosting us turns out to be your way of saying that you weren't a great fit for the opportunity and not deserving of working for our client company. You might have looked good on paper and you may have handled our first conversation well but not answering an email or text in a timely manner (or at all) and not returning our phone call demonstrated that you lack the all-important soft skills and probably some degree of emotional intelligence.

To our Recruiter friends and hiring companies, unlike the very bad break-up line, ultimately it's THEM and not you. You dodged a bullet so break up with the bad candidate and stop chasing them. Just make sure that you make a note of their bad behavior in your ATS so that when they come knocking in the future, you can flip the script.

There is obviously a selection problem, the issue should be how are you selecting candidates because that person that is now ghosting you was in the eye of your trained professionals the best choice. Sure people can be an ungrateful a.. h... but the question to ask is why your selection team is pick a.. h...
