Ghost Job Posting

Ghost Job Posting

I’ve been ghosted through text before, but I never expected it from companies or employers. The rise of ghost job postings listings that seem active but aren’t meant to fill real vacancies has been a shocking and frustrating trend. In my opinion, it’s disheartening for job seekers who invest time and energy into applying for jobs that aren’t real. Today, I’ve decided to take a break from talking about networking events to shed light on this growing problem that many of us have experienced: ghost job postings. Crazy, right?

This made me curious about why companies would post job listings that aren’t actually available. What benefit do they get from advertising positions that don’t exist? After some thought, I came up with a few potential reasons: first, companies might gather resumes for future roles, inflate their growth, or meet HR metrics. They might be sharing applicant data with third parties, which is concerning given the amount of personal information we provide during the application process. Meanwhile, the media boasts about job availability but rarely mentions ghost postings. Today, I was reminded why I wanted to write this article. I came across a LinkedIn post where a woman shared that she had to turn down an applicant after several rounds of interviews. What stood out was her transparency, she took the time to personally contact the candidate to explain that they had chosen to go with someone else. This direct approach, instead of a automated rejection makes a significant difference in the overall experience for the applicant, showing respect and professionalism. It’s frustrating to put in effort only to realize the job might not have existed at all. It's no wonder people are feeling discouraged. Here are some ways to identify a potential ghost job posting when job searching.

Vague job description - If the details are unclear or the role seems too general, it might be a red flag.

Long-standing posting - Positions that remain open for months without updates can indicate they aren’t actively hiring.

Lack of contact - If you apply and receive no feedback or only automated responses, the posting may be inactive.

Reposting the same role frequently - Repeatedly listing the same job without hires could suggest it's a placeholder.

Ghost Job postings jeopardize trust between the employer and job seeker. We should encourage honest practices where companies upload honest post and job seekers invest their time in meaningful opportunities. If you've encountered a ghost job posting share your experience below. Let's start the conversation. Below, I’ve shared a video of someone explaining how they were fired for refusing to post ghost job listings.
