by Banking, Finance and Capital Markets Practice Group.

The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Limited (GhIPPS) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has officially launched the GhanaPay mobile wallet. GhanaPay is a mobile money service provided by universal banks, rural banks, and savings and loans companies to individuals and businesses.

The Governor of the BoG, Dr Ernest Addison, in a speech given at the launch stated that, “This collaborative effort of a common electronic wallet would enable economies of scale through pooling of resources. By establishing this common GhanaPay mobile wallet, the cost of testing new technology for each bank is reduced and allows new ways of doing business.”

He further stated that the launch of GhanaPay is “one of such innovations in the financial sector that seeks to address some of the challenges associated with the current bank centric models by providing an open application that leverages on network infrastructure of the entire banking industry”

Chief Executive of GhIPSS, Archie Hesse, in an interview with Joy Business said the platform will be used to tackle the challenge facing the rural unbanked population.
