Getting Your Resume Through The ATS Isn't Enough

The #1 problem job seekers describe to me is getting through Applicant Tracking Systems.

But even if you get through ATSs more often, it's not enough to get a job, not even enough to get an interview.

Only 10-15% of the resumes that get through an employer's ATS are awarded interviews. That's it.

Here's why getting your resume through the ATS isn't enough:

  1. Employers expect 5-10 qualified candidates to compete for each interview spot: In 2022, so many people are trying to change jobs (50-65% of the US workforce), that employers expect many qualified candidates. If they're trying to fill 10 interview spots, they expect to see 50-100 qualified candidates, plus all the unqualified ones.
  2. ATSs Create A Shortlist Of About 50 Candidates: These 50 candidates are ranked by the number of keywords they match, of roughly 7-10 criteria. If you match less than 90% of criteria, your resume probably isn't getting to the short list, but remains buried.
  3. Recruiters Don't Read Every Resume On The Shortlist: Once they've found enough candidates to forward to a hiring manager (usually 15-20), they stop. It's not their job to find the best candidates (that's the hiring manager's job). The recruiter's job is to forward enough candidates who meet minimum criteria to fill interview available spots ... as quickly as possible.
  4. The Hiring Manager Chooses 5-7 For Interviews: Depending on the number of candidates the hiring manager already knew and wanted on their team and internal candidates, the hiring manager and/or HR chooses 5-7 candidates.

Out of 50 candidates that get through the ATS, only 5-7 (10-15%) are selected for interviews. Many of these 5-7 interviews are low quality with little or no chance of being hired.

Good thing there are ways you can increase the odds that you'll be chosen for an interview, and get a high quality interview with a high chance of being hired. You'll have to learn how to do more than just get through the ATS. to get what you want.
