The importance of the Right Mind-set:
Shift your way of thinking from why to how, Why focuses on the negative, such as why something can’t be done. Instead we need to focus on the How! How gives us the answers, provides possibilities and solutions.
- Focus on your opportunities, focus on what you can do or what you have control over! Most of us talk about our problems and way too much focus on what’s wrong and not right in our life!
- If you think of reasons WHY you can't do something guess what happens?
- When you think of things you can do, or think of how to change your situation, you find solutions...this is called the Solution Mind set
Create opportunity for yourself and NOT limitations - so many of us limit what we want to do because of our belief system, lacking belief in yourself means always self limitations.
- Limiting beliefs are simply assumptions about reality that are not true. We create unnecessary barriers before they even happen and in many cases they don’t happen.
The vicious cycle: Setting goals and direction in our lives (or no direction), BELIEF (or lack of it), Taking the right Action (or not), Getting great Results (or Bad) Having the Confidence to do more (or not)....
- To set powerful goals we have to truly believe in them, we have know these goals have real value in our lives. Most people only talk about what they want but can’t easily explain why the want it. A powerful why helps create a strong belief system.
- If we create goals aligned to our values, we truly believe we can be successful, we take the required actions, we do what is right, we do what we know intuitively what is right! This boosts our overall confidence in ourselves and it increases the likelihood that we can achieve other different goals we set for ourselves in future!
THE GROW MODEL (Goal, Reality, Options, Will) The Grow model empowers the person to make bigger changes..
Most coaches will encourage people to set goals which are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic and Time-framed)
The GROW Model this will assist you in assessing objectively where you currently are in relation to for example your career development and how you feel about this current situation.
Goals - This process is of discovery and is designed to allow you to clarify your goals better and understand them more deeply, considering what is driving them and what their sources of dissatisfaction are, or things that stop you from moving forward etc.
Reality- It is important to engage in self-assessment as much as possible and create a better awareness of what we can do to change, by often looking inside for Why we stop ourselves rather than looking outside for reasons we can not move forward! Looking to blame external forces as opposed to be honest about ourselves and that we own this and no else!
The Options stage of the GROW Model is the idea is not to find a solution immediately, we must Create Options, generate as many alternative courses of action as possible. Give yourself more options and more opportunities than you usually do, helps provide a variety of solutions to move forward positively. Start to create a powerful solution focused mind-set goin forward!
Once a number of options have been identified the next stage will be to decide which one you want to put into action to help move you towards your ultimate goals.
In this final the Will stage of the GROW Model it is moving from the options to a conclusion and achievement. It’s about saying - I will do this! Will is powerful!
Try. - is a weaker stance to making improvements in our careers or personal development! You may have seen one of the older Starwars movies when Yoda tells Luke that, *There is No Try Luke only Do or Do Not* :)
The ultimate direction is to identify goals, options and actions for themselves, including:
- What you are is going to do?
- When you will do it?
- What difficulties might be faced on the way? (Always asses the steps you will take before taking them, a kind of Rish Hedge process!
- How you may fix issues as they come your way? Stop them before they happen?
- Who you will tell these goals to is powerful. Sharing leads to commitment!
- What support you may try to get to help with your actions?
Wrap up - Factors for Higher Engagement to help you on the way :)
Here is a list of some contributing factors:
? Truly Understanding the goals!
? Understanding of what you do and how it contributes to overall goals!
? Making sure you set goals, personal expectations, directions etc.
? Support and tools - finding the right support to others a mentor etc and having the right tools to get you there!
? Recognition - Looking back over the path you have come, understanding you are always moving forward and yes there will be things that stop or slow you down!
? Learning and development opportunities - Look at how you can grow and learn fro this process!
? Opportunities for advancement - Realize that you can always do more, there is no limitations only those that you set in your mind!
? Work-life balance - If you are setting work goals or personal goals, understand how they all fit together, get a fair balance in both!
