Getting Your Employer To Give You All You Want

You can have everything in life you want if you will just help your employer get what she wants. This is a paraphrase of a quote by the legendary Zig Ziglar. Unfortunately, most employees are so self-conscious and focused to think of this. They are there for their needs. They make work all about them.

While coaching a lady on value creation in her workplace, she mentioned how she had come up with a number of ideas and her employer had outrightly rejected those ideas. She thought she was doing him a favour.?It hurt her but as a professional, she was told not to take it personal. No matter how professional we are, we still remain humans.

She never got to understand why her employer rejected those ideas inasmuch as they are great ones. Her employer had told her that she should focus on why she was employed rather than bring ideas outside her job description. I told her matter-of-factly that he rejected her idea because she hasn’t built a relationship with him. Value creation only happens when there is a relationship.

Esther was a young Jewish girl who won the contest through her behaviour, character and beauty to become the wife of a king. The king rejected Vasti as queen and then chose Esther as his queen. Why did Vasti fail while Esther succeeded? The reason behind Esther’s success can help employees to get all they want and more from their employers. The secret is called is in building a relationship. Esther built a relationship that was focused on giving value to the king

She was able to influence the king to see things have way because she took time to build a relationship with him. She wasn’t in a hurry to ask for anything. She took her time. Every employee can adopt her strategy while building a relationship with their employer. Influence is the product of a relationship.

1. Have A Coach: Like every athlete who wants to perform at their highest, every employee need to have a coach. Esther made the king's butler her coach. He was her guide to the needs and wants of the king. He showed her the way to the king's heart. A coach will help you find a way to touch the heart of your employer before you ask for a hand. You need a coach to help you navigate the work of the workplace, perform at your highest and get all that you want.

2. Build Credibility: Make sure that you are good at what you are told to do. Without credibility, you can’t influence your employer. You must meet your employer’s expectations and exceed them to really have a relationship that will allow you to influence them. Esther appeared before the king the way she knew he would want her to appear. She met the foundation for influence: credibility. No one will buy into your ideas without first buying into you as a person.

3. Build Rapport: Show your employer that it isn’t about you but her. When you focus on your employer’s needs, you open up your employer for influence. Even though Esther had something she wanted the king to do for her, she focused on serving his needs and wants. ?As what your employer wants and listen attentively and genuinely. Don’t make the work about yourself; make it about your employer. Hide your need; focus on helping your employer with her needs. That way you build rapport. Appreciate your employer for all she is doing and any little achievement. Be curious and interested in your employer. Ask about her vision and listen engagingly and attentively. Be present while she shares her vision and writes out points. Let your ideas to serve come from these discussions and give credit to your employer. Rapport means getting into your employer's heart and mind.

4. Invest Time, Money & Energy To Be Useful & Valuable: She entertained him and treated him like royalty for 3 good days. This doesn’t mean you have to take your employer out. It means you should use your time and money to invest in your growth and development. To be valuable to your employer, you will need to develop the right mindset and capability. Your promise of value to your employer should be backed with the capability to deliver the promised value. You provide your employer with confidence and excitement when you develop the capability to capture opportunities.

5. Serve Your Employer: Give value and give more value. Capture that opportunity for your employer. Now that you have built rapport with your employer, your ideas will be accepted. Your either will be based on what your employer wants and not what you want. Most times when employees suggest an idea without building rapport with their employers, all the employers hear is that they don’t know what they are doing. So they reject the idea because they want the employees to implement it independently. Let your service to your employer be based on your appreciation of what she is already doing.

5. Give. Give. Give. Ask: Resist the temptation to ask for what you want even if your employer asks you that. Focus on being transformational, not transactional. Esther treated her king royally for three days before making her ask. Even when the king asked her what she wanted, she resisted telling him. Instead, she gave him value. She placed him in a frame of mind that he couldn't resist her asking. She first touched his heart. The first value must have bypassed his scepticism. The second value must have got him hooked. And the third value must have got him fully persuaded. After the third value she gave, he was ready to give her whatever she wants even to half of his kingdom. Always convince your employer that you are there for her and to make her future bigger and better. When she senses that you are there for what you can get not what you can give, she will close up and reject whatever you want.
