Getting your #dreamjob - how to get your first professional position &/or getting relevant experience (second part – link to the first part of the article on the first comment)
On the last post, the focus was on on target audience that is already working in an org.
Relevant for #students , #graduates (in IL freed military service soldiers and individuals that are after the “big trip around the world”) who are trying to seize their first opportunity increasing their professional experience.
Here are 6 ideas to have a think about:
1.??????#socialmedia presence (#linkedin and in some countries #facebook & #instagram ): Looking for a role in tech.? your most important intro. Is your social #mediafootprint.
Got an opportunity to be considered as a candidate with no experience?
The #talentacquisitionspecialist will start digging up on your #socialmediapresence .
Yes, you should learn how #linkedin is working (what is appropriate and more important – what is NOT appropriate – its time to add your sophisticated profile pic. This is not dating app. ??). ?
The investment on LinkedIn is a long-time investment as this professional intro. Will partner you on your business world for a long time from here. Its (at least as) important as your CVs (hope you put an effort there).
Here are some ideas and tips on building #linkedinprofile (but you can find countless good ones online) https://www.dhirubhai.net/help/linkedin/answer/a554351/how-do-i-create-a-good-linkedin-profile-?lang=en .
2.??????Don’t keep it as a secret (don’t be shy ??): Several years ago I joined a lecture called “the list”, on that lecture it was mentioned that we are been told from early age not to share our dreams (make a wish while blowing the candles BUT don’t tell it to anyone if you want it to come true..its a secret WRONG!). This mindset wont help you getting your next professional opportunity (or any other dream BTW), on the contrary, make sure EVERYONE knows youre looking for your first professional role.
A good chance that your neighbor, a friend of your parents, the partner of your sister etc. are your best (caring) professional network & its much more logical that if someone cares about you, you have a better chance to get that opportunity than via sending your CV in a sterile hiring system. ?
Ask for help & make sure all of your social network is updated and helping you.
Someone told you: “I think there might be something on my office” ? don’t say thank you and move on, follow up with him/ her, send them a note a few days later (the world is hectic and not everyone remembers you search all day long).
3.??????#internship , #volunteeringmatters & #projects (pro bono): The name of the game is experience, that will take your added value higher, gaining this experience is not only on orgs. as a standard employee. ?Try to gain as much of that experience as you can (even with no payment at starts). One of the students that I was helping to get his first role as a SW Eng. told me he opened a page online in which he shared (with EVERONE) his SW projects, he had there freelance, volunteer – pro bono for social orgs.

That helped him “color” himself as a SW engineer and allowed him to have a real hands on experience on the professional field he is targeting.
4.??????Intern programs via your universities: Most universities will have business links and special programs for graduates and interns. That link helps org. to hire graduates.
As an individual that was present and led several of those from the perspective of a hiring org. I can share with you that the variety oy students approaching is BROAD:
a.??????The ones who came “meaning business” – appropriately dressed, CVs folder pre-ready printed (not shared easily, only AFTER asking questions, assessing the org.), trying to get an interview ASAP (as they already have 3 other potential interviews), with a printed diploma filled with course graduation scores.
b.??????The one with flip flops, on the way to the... (Shopping center or the beach)
YES – This is your first interview, make the most out of it, you’ll find competition in here like any other role, this time it’s your classmates who are competing you.
5.??????Market #recession2022 & down to earth: Statistically its considered that 3-6 months is the avg. time to find your next role (in a normal market state), that is also depends on how much flexible are you (willing to work on anything coming to you or stiff on looking for the perfect match).
It is important to base your status on statistics and don’t self-punish yourself if you’re not on the deadline after two months.
As we are feeling the recession, and several orgs. Froze new hiring, add another month or two based on market situation.
On the same note, if you’re looking for over 6 months its time to re-think on:
a.??????Find a career consultant/ coach: If you’re looking for over 6 months, it might be a good time to invest on a professional point of view, this guide should help you understand what’s going on and where are you missing something: CVs not good enough? Getting to several interviews BUT no moving to the next steps? Dream org. you’ve missed?
Also – don’t be shy to ask for feedback, most orgs. will corporate on that and reflect at least some of the things made them come back to you with a negative answer.
6.??????Ask Google: Hiring brands will advertise and share job opportunities for candidates with no experience on several platforms (job boards, Glassdoor, etc.) Ive shared on the comments of this post the search options in Heb on google for none experienced open jobs (you’ll find there Facebook groups, staffing agencies, ?and hiring firms).
Botom line – don’t forget, ?#allaboutpeople?(not only: how luxurious your diploma is, specific industry, gender, religion, etc.). You need just one person to believe in Your greatness and open the door for that dream job, from that point things gets much easier.
