Getting your attitude right

Getting your attitude right

To build a business, deliver a project or motivate a team the leader has to stand, front and centre and display confidence that success will be achieved.

On a good day, this is easy and a joy but on those tough days (we've all had them) it requires us to display a mental fortitude that can be hard to maintain.

This week I look at the key mental characteristics you need to develop and practise if you are to succeed in our competitive world,

  1. Focus: it is not time or money that is the critical factor in delivering success, it is our ability to utilise our mental capability to resolve issues and deliver on opportunities. In a world of distraction, the ability to focus can be thought of as a superpower.
  2. Action: Once a decision is arrived upon taking action in a timely decisive manner is essential. To dither or allow procrastination to take over will destroy more value in a venture than anything else.
  3. Optimism: Maintaining and exuding positivity will empower those around you and attract those you need to help. But this optimism can not be faked, we must avoid lying to ourselves. Surround yourself with those who will help you maintain your positivity.
  4. Gratitude: Through the practice of taking time out of each day to remind ourselves of the people and world around us we can develop a gratitude-based belief system. This has been life-changing for me and I encourage all to explore and study this subject.

1. Focus

We understand the benefits of remaining focused but how can we improve our ability to remain "on task"? Here's what I do.

2. Optomism

Your positivity can be heavily affected by those whom you surround yourself with. Be sure to keep "radiators" close and ""drains, you don't need them!

3. Gratitude

I practise acknowledging my gratitude for the people around me daily. Now there is scientific research to prove the benefits of showing gratitude.

4. Action

As an entrepreneur, we are not "managed" it is up to us to take the necessary steps to move projects forward. But how do we avoid the twin threats of "perfectionism" and "procrastination"?

My technique is to create mini-deadlines and hold myself accountable for these.

A great read Russell Dalgleish with strong advice and guidance. Can't disagree with your Top 4 - many characteristics can be debated but these 4 are as good as any other contender. I wrote a post recently about learnings for business leadership from UEFA coaching courses. UEFA encourage the CORE model throughout all academies. It is designed to be led by coaches (as leaders in the organisation) but to be understood and adopted by kids. It's very simple: Commitment Ownership Responsibility = Excellence. Elite football academies are, of course, based on developing high-potential, high-performance cultures. This model specifies the values, attitudes and behaviours expected in order to drive that - from Director level down to 7 year old academy players. The take away for me, as a coach participant was how directly applicable this was to business.

LUCK, having good, and avoiding bad. “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity". This quote, attributed to Roman philosopher?Seneca, reminds us that we make our own luck. (both Good and Bad). Being prepared to 'take' opportunity, and to 'avoid', or mitigate problems. Just as some people are naturally positive, so too some are lucky.
