"Getting What You Deserve: Negotiation Tips from the Recruiter Who’s Seen It All"
As a recruiter, I’ve been on the front lines of many negotiations. While some have been exquisite displays of poise and tact, others—well, let's just say they resembled a heated family argument over the last piece of pie.
"How do I negotiate?" is one of the most common questions I get from people. And when I tell them it’s not as scary as they think, they usually respond with something like, “Easy for you to say!”
The good news is that negotiation isn't about outwitting someone. It's about honoring everyone's contributions while gaining what you are entitled to.?
And sure enough, you don't need a sedative to accomplish this!
Here are my top tips for taking on negotiations with confidence and a healthy dose of strategy.
1. Know Your Value – And Own It
Let's face it, no one else will figure out your value if you don't realize it yourself. The fundamental foundation of negotiating is understanding what you have to offer. Recognize your abilities, achievements, and special worth first. It's one thing to say, "I have five years of experience," but it's a whole different vibe to say, "In my five years, I increased team efficiency by 40% and saved the company $100K by streamlining processes.
Walk in knowing exactly who you are and what you’ve done.
2. Practice the Fine Art of Silence
Here’s a pro tip: silence is your friend. You know that awkward pause that feels like it’s about a year long? Lean into it. Once you state your ask, let it hang in the air. Don’t rush to fill the silence or backpedal with, “But if that’s too much…”

By letting the other side process, you give your ask the weight it deserves. And if you’re feeling brave, try this out in front of a mirror (or your pet) a few times. It’s amazing how much confidence you can gain from a few good moments of silence.
3. Negotiate the Whole Package, Not Just the Number
Salary is critical, but it's not the whole picture.
Can’t get the number you want? Consider asking for more flexibility, professional development opportunities, performance-based bonuses, or stock options.
Think about benefits that would add value to your life and career—they often end up making a bigger difference than a slight bump in base pay.
4. Be Prepared for the Back-and-Forth
Negotiation is like ping-pong: there’s back-and-forth, and that's okay! Prepare for counteroffers, and don’t take them personally. Employers have budgets, internal policies, and financial constraints that might not always match your ideal ask. Stay flexible, and be ready to tweak your expectations if there’s a reasonable offer on the table.
5. Close the Deal with Grace
Whether you get exactly what you asked for or land somewhere in the middle, finish with gratitude. Appreciation is powerful, and it builds relationships that extend far beyond this negotiation. Thank them for their time, emphasize how excited you are to contribute, and reiterate the value you’re bringing to the team.
One last thing: remember that every negotiation experience is a win because it teaches you something new. And, in the words of every great negotiator who’s learned from experience, “You’ll get even better next time.”
And if all else fails, remember my best-kept secret: picture the person across the table in bunny slippers. Works every time. ??
