A Deep Dive into Binge Eating Disorder
Emma Murphy MIACP
CEO Eating Freely - Trainers and Service Providers in Emotional Eating & Binge Eating Disorder I Healthcare Partners.
This week, my video is a little bit different, and for the first time ever, I share a lot more of my personal story to understand how I came to be where I am today – a specialist in disordered eating. ???
Linn Thorstensson is one of our amazing Licensed Eating Freely Practitioners and is our Senior Nutrition Trainer on our practitioner training team.? A Registered Nutritional Therapist and Body Image Coach, Linn brings a wealth of experience to her clients, and to our trainees!
So when she approached me and asked me to be interviewed for her new podcast – Joyful & Nourishing – I was delighted to agree.
It should be no secret by now that I share the personality type of our clients, I speak about it regularly. Like our clients I am uncomfortable with being too vulnerable with others! ?
So I surprised myself on this podcast with Linn when I opened up fully about parts of my own journey from small business development to being a disordered eating specialist, and how my own past also mirrors that of our clients – unacknowledged trauma anyone?!
This is a full-length podcast on video, so you can either watch or listen with a cuppa or whilst doing something else. ?We’ll cover:
??- Why I was drawn to disordered eating when I didn’t even understand it!
?- How my own life experience mirrors that of a lot of our clients, but crucially also differs in a key respect;
?- Why the past influences what foods our clients binge on, or turn to for comfort;
?- Why diets genuinely never work for our clients;
?- How today’s triggers for emotional eating are rooted in the past;
- ‘Magical thinking’ and why clients regularly ‘forget’ that they HAVE to eat!!
?- The danger of misinformation and shaming by ‘Recovered Guru’s ‘ on social media;
?- ‘Tips and tricks’ vs getting specialist help.
You can watch or listen back to the podcast here:
We talk about ‘magical thinking’ and the very common trigger of hunger for binge eating. Here are the pages from the book ‘The Four Energies of Emotional Eating’ which show you the relevant Earth Energy card for this theme, along with the deeper explanation, reflection questions for clients and a journalling page they can use to explore this.

1 年This was a fantastic listen! Loved the deep dive into personality characteristics. Also loved that you mentioned older women who continue to struggle - some of my favorite clients are in their 60s, 70s and beyond. ??
