Getting Together and Getting Real
Last weekend I was extremely fortunate to land a spot at FaffCon 9, a very special and unique gathering of 150 of my colleagues and mentors in the voiceover world. At this "un-conference" there is no preset agenda or presenters. Everyone comes together to organically and improvisationally create a whole range of sessions that cover everything from performance to recording technology to business development. Thanks to a strict code of ethics and confidentiality, participants are free to truly open up to both share their best practices and well as get honest about their questions and struggles.
Time and again I am simply blown away by the powerful opportunities that are generated simply in revealing ourselves honestly to one another. To offer both our brilliance and our ugliness without editing, we create a space in which we can give what others need and get exactly what we need in turn. Every time we let ego get in the way and hold back instead, we lose out and so do those around us. We are diminished and so are our communities.
As my brilliant and talented soul sister and VO partner-in-crime put it so beautifully in the session she led yesterday, "We all need one person who leads us, one person whom we can lead, and two to walk beside us." I encourage you to find a way to embrace the power of vulnerability in your own life and communities this week. The world needs good people like you to show up completely and truly now more than ever.
On a related note, if you're not one of the thirty-one million plus viewers of Brené Browns most famous talk on The Power of Vulnerability, I'd say it's definitely time that we remedied that! I get something else out of it every single time I watch it.
