Getting Through a Video Interview in a Positive Way

Getting Through a Video Interview in a Positive Way

In the current climate and with the COVID issues rampant and becoming more so by the day, the odds are excellent that at some point in the near future you’re going to be asked to create a video interview.

Any interview can be difficult but a video interview may be more so. How will this be unique from the regular interview or tele-interview and how are you going to do when it comes down to grass tacks?

The video interview isn't that different from a person to person interview. In some cases, companies are using nothing more than Skype to create the interview, and you're in front of a team of people.

It's a bit more awkward probably, but that can realistically be used to your advantage if you're at ease in front of a camera.

Conversely, if they are using a platform other than Skype, there can be a significant difference. Depending on the platform that you use, some video interviews may be using an algorithm that can rate you. That puts the video interview in a whole new ballpark.

HireVue and several other video interview platforms use Artificial Intelligence. They use this to rate and to analyze the performance of the candidate based on multiple facets of the interview, including:

  • Answer content
  • Voice intonation
  • Body language

Understanding how this works will help you to get the best out of the video interview. Here are a few tips to help you to create a better video interview

Your answer content—what you say and how you said it.

The video interview algorithm can often use a language processing component that monitors the things you say and assesses the keywords that you use in your answers to their questions. It will compare the keywords to the job posting to see how well you fit or how well your answers matched the job description.

One of the best ways to stay ahead of the curve on the video interview is by reading and knowing the job post.

Voice Intonation

The algorithms from many of these video interview programs also take a closer look at how you speak. They analyze the tone of your voice and the style that you are using to speak. Understanding that algorithm will help you to be more effective at acing the video interview.

If you say something such as "I always work hard" but using a very flat tone, which is often indicative of deception, the algorithm may see your statement as not being honest.

The tone of voice that you use speaks a great deal about you. If a sentence that projects excitement or something positive about you is couched in a tone that has a flat affect, your statements are not convincing to the algorithm or another human being.

People base their approval or belief in you on your tone of voice when you are speaking to them directly. Many algorithms will replicate this and judge whether you are genuine or not based on that tone.

Body Language

Similar to the tone of voice, the body can also reveal a lot of information about you. According to research, more than ninety percent of the things people infer about you are inferred by your body language. It reveals very crucial things about you that are very telling.

How you sit, the expressions on your fact, the hand or arm gestures that you use tell the world what kind of a person you are.

If your interview—for example, was going to be for a salesperson, the things that you do with your body will tell them --or the algorithm--how good you will be in that position. You want your body to impart confidence, knowledge, persuasion, etc.

Finding out how to leave someone with that impression is imperative. Sounds crazy? Google it. Find out how to go beyond words and sell them on your sincerity and skills using your body language.

There are multiple ways to manage the algorithms and make sure that you do well during your interview. Take some time to do your homework and make sure that you learn some video interview skills so that you can ace your video interview the first and every time.
