How to Start a Business -Helen Emore
The place to start is in envisioning. Like we said, what is your plan for yourself? Where do you see yourself in the next 3-5years? Do you know the sector you want to be in or the impact you want to make? I have one very simple one called FITS which I borrowed from the book ‘Way of the Seal’, by Mark Divine.
1. Fitness: Check the Fitness of your idea to what the market wants and your capabilities
2. Importance: Is it an Important offering? Are people willing to pay for it?
3.Timing: Are you timing all your actions appropriately. Just because we say any time is a good time to start a business, does not mean you can go ahead and execute /operate without planning with clear and appropriate timelines.
4. Simplicity – when you are starting keep it simple and straightforward. Line upon line. Start with one and grow.
If you start with a complex offering and system, you will struggle. I remember one senior executive who left a communication company with multiple business units to start his own business. He started with almost the same number of businesses that an organization that had been in existence for over 25years had. The business failed, because it was too complex for a start up. So sad….
