Getting started with cross-border selling in 2024

Selling to customers overseas is a fantastic way to tap into new markets, find new customers and overcome seasonality. In 2022, cross-border accounted for 17% of B2C e-commerce revenue in the UK (1). But if you’ve never explored exporting, it can be a daunting prospect. We asked John Pink, Head of International at DHL eCommerce UK, his top tips for getting started with cross-border selling in 2024:

Data is king…

“Since Brexit, we’ve moved from frictionless trade into Europe to a more complex environment. Yes, there are new considerations that you have to think about, especially around customs. But it’s looking positive for business owners: logistics companies have developed solutions to handle customs effectively, quickly and simply. Now, data is king: having the right data at the beginning of a journey is paramount to getting the best possible experience for shipper and recipient.

At DHL, we needed to create a solution that incorporated customs clearance, which we launched last year. Now, after a period of Brexit disruption, we’re linked back into our Europe-wide Parcel Connect network. We’re seeing great traction from customers entering the market with that service, helping them to be fully customs compliant. I like to say we turn ‘custdooms’ into just ‘customs’!”

Each country has their own buying habits

“Every country is different. In the UK we like deliveries to our home address, but in Poland they much prefer their parcels delivered to a locker. People in France would rather their deliveries go to a parcel shop than be left in a safe place or with a neighbour. What’s really catching on across Europe is flexibility and choice, so you need a provider that can enable that.

DHL has more access points, like lockers and parcel shops, across Europe than anyone else – 110,000+ of them! It gives your overseas customers true convenience and choice. And the whole of the Parcel Connect network uses best in class providers working to the same high standards as we do.”

Don’t be scared!

“Yes cross-border selling can be overwhelming, and the perceived operational headaches can definitely be a barrier, so come and talk to the right company who can give you advice. DHL eCommerce UK has experience in local markets – we can tell you what recipient buying habits are like, so you know how best to market your business. And we offer an affordable, fast and reliable service that makes it easy to get started. If you’re not sure, just come and chat to us!”
