How can you use teaching evaluations to show your effectiveness in the classroom?

In general, we should move away from student evaluations of teaching and towards peer observation, and definitively away from quantifiable measures that allow comparison between teachers. Especially while teaching is in course, students do not yet know how effective it has been. And in any case, it is extremely well demonstrated that student evaluations enshrine all manner of unconscious bias. This is why comparable measures are dangerous. As someone who's worked as a teacher and in educational leadership roles in Saudi Arabia, I know that setting clear goals is the first step. You should have a clear idea of what you want your students to learn before you start teaching. This makes it easier to show how good you are at teaching. You should also gather feedback from your students, which usually means asking them for their thoughts at the end of a class or a semester. Sometimes, colleagues or school leaders may also watch you teach and give feedback.

(Part 1) My initial response to this question, of the use and effectiveness of teaching evals, was to simply not use them. These usually ensnare women of color faculty. Additionally, the students who feel most wronged in a classroom complete these to leverage vengeance on the instructor. This is not to say that students who enjoyed the class don't leave positive reviews--they do. But we can't gloss over the harm evals often cause. I assess my teaching effectiveness throughout the semester--certainly after major assignments or at unit/ module enclosures. I then share results with students and share proactive measures I will take to improve. I also write summaries of validation--that speaks to how well the students are doing in the class.

Teaching is a human encounter where the teacher is open to learn from the students to be in a better position to help them develop their skills and grow. The sharing of the knowledge they both have is essential for new learning to take place. This is distinct from what Freire (2000) calls 'banking education' - where the teacher as expert seeks to 'deposit' set content into the students' minds, as if they were a tabula rasa. Dialogic education is transformative and enriching, because students feel valued for who they are, while teachers, through listening and understanding can evaluate their methodology and lesson goals and adapt to students' needs and learning styles for greater effectiveness.

I like using peer evaluation to get a perspective on my teaching experience. I invite colleagues for peer observations and follow up with a reflection on what went well and what can be done better. This has proved to be an excellent tool to assess the effectiveness of my teaching and work on improvements. It’s good to offer your colleagues the chance to be observed as well and help them with insights. But always make sure to have it done in a positive constructive manner.

If we are evidence-focused, then we know that student evaluation results are problematic at best. Additionally, we know that students are more likely to rate their female professors as less effective. Since the evaluations are predictable, provide students with a survey mmid-semester that is similar to the evaluation. Then, make it transparent to students how you are implementing their feedback. Students will feel seen and heard and will be more likely to increase your rating at the end of the semester.

As a higher education teacher, I've always leaned towards being objective-oriented. I find that focusing on measurable outcomes and data-driven feedback allows for a more structured and clear evaluation of my teaching effectiveness. By setting specific objectives and using quantifiable metrics, I can better assess the impact of my methods on student progress and achievement. Coming from an engineering education background, it is important to let the students know what you expect from them. Additionally, ask them what they are expecting from you. With this information, self-evaluate your course several times during a semester and provide yourself and management a summary. Additionally, I find it very worthwhile to have your teaching peers observe you over small chunks of time. Then get a summary from them that evaluates you holistically but critically. Student evaluations have merit, but in my opinion too judgemental and tend to focus on one event instead of a summary of all parts of a course.

Integration of qualitative data capture is essential, although often hampered by survey fatigue experienced by students. This is further compounded by many evaluation being fielded at the end of courses. Evaluation models that collect data early in the course offering opportunities for instructors to be responsive to students requests can often be more effective and increase enagagment

It's important to remind ourselves to try new things because we tend to stick to what we know. By being open to change and trying out different approaches, we can discover better ways of doing things and keep improving.

A teaching portfolio design I've found effective starts with a summary of teaching experience (reverse chronological list of classes taught by institution), followed by a brief (one page or less) teaching philosophy, and a summary of teaching evaluations and sample syllabi that mirror the original order. Since most end-of-course surveys use a five-point Likert scale and ask similar questions, they can be easily summarized in tables that note relevant items and scores, an overall rating where available, and number of respondents. Depending on one's depth and breadth of teaching experience and the similarity end-of-course survey items, these tables ideally illustrate iterative improvement by class and institution that supports your narrative.

Having evaluations is always great, but it's not the only way. I like to ask for people to leave feedback on anonymous websites like "ratemyprofessor" as well as participate in my last day of school feedback day. Make sure to give them options, and care enough to review all of them.

The most important thing is to first inform or educate the students on expected educational outcomes and the way they are being measured through evaluations and the evaluation rubrics. Then it is important to be transparent on evaluations so that students have faith in them. Lastly, do give timely feedback. It may do well to divide evaluations into formative and summative. Formatives are like tasting food while cooking and because cooking can be improved, so should the credits of formative evaluations. Summative should be automatically good if Formatives are done in all sincerity. Although for students to have faith in them it's important that a timely feed back and a fair chance to defend are also made available

Using the wisdom of Benjamin Bloom, who categorized learning into different domains, ensure your teaching aligns with these standards. It is important to remember that the goals of education in general, and teaching in particular, are not limited to the duration of a course or a class but are temporally extended, hopefully over far longer periods. I want my students to benefit from their education over months and years, not just in terms of getting a good grade or ensuring they graduate. So, it might be useful for us to incorporate longer-term feedback cycles in our evaluations to ensure we are not confusing popularity and feel good factors at the end of the course with true educational impacts.

I retired from teaching five years ago. I watched the assessments carefully every semester and learned a great deal from them. I think that I still see the results of my teaching through the fact that I hear from at least two former students every week. Some of these people were my students 19 years ago. If they still want my input, that speaks volumes to me. If I hadn’t paid attention to what they were saying and changed appropriately, I think that I would not have had the same impact.

It is very difficult to judge the effectiveness of teaching, especially for learners who are not yet in working life and therefore do not have the necessary hindsight to do so. There are, however, a number of indicators that can be used, including the degree of student involvement in the course. Except in special cases, the more motivated they feel to invest in the course, the better the effectiveness of the course. Another criterion is the reuse by colleagues from other training institutions of the pedagogical approach used and the resources that accompany it.

I think it is important for teachers to be objective in viewing their teaching evaluation. Do not take the evaluation as a crash on your ego rather you should work on the areas your students have identified. This will ultimately enhance the teaching-learning experience.

I think this thread misses something that's really important: opportunities for impromptu, ad hoc, and mid-course feedback. As faculty, are you encouraging any and all types of insight about what's going well and what needs fixing BEFORE your course ends? Arrive early, hang out late, field a SurveyMonkey, scan your discussion groups, etc. When you get actionable feedback, own it! Acknowledge it — "my lectures have unfortunately gone into overtime as of late" — and commit to a solution. And, of course, celebrate all feedback as a gift. Be appreciative for it. If your learners didn't care, they wouldn't share.
