Getting the Right People On the Bus

Patrick Lencioni gave an amazing keynote at the recent EOS Implementer Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The essence of his talk was this:

To enjoy the happiness and effectiveness of the "Teamwork Trifecta", you must...

  1. Get the Right People on the bus
  2. Ensure they are in the Right Seats
  3. Get everyone to perform as a Team

This week I'll share some of the thoughts Lencioni presented about item #1... How to find and get the Right People onboard.

Who Are You?

Before you can go looking for the Right People, you have to be clear about WHO you are at the core of your organization. Your Core Values are a reflection of your company culture. Interviewing a job candidate is mostly about assessing the candidate's alignment with your culture and values.

How can you do this effectively? You must have non-traditional interviews to truly assess who the right people are.

Three Great Interview Tips...

1. See How Candidates Manage the Unexpected

  • ask them to turn off their zoom background
  • ask them to go grab something they love from their home and tell you about it
  • ask them to bring in someone else from their house... ask that person to tell you about the candidate
  • meet them in town or at the grocery store and go shopping. Try shopping for something that might seem uncomfortable -- personal items like underwear

2. Ask Questions More than Once

  • the effect is that you'll often get a deeper, more authentic answer the second time
  • say "no, really ... If I were to ask your last boss about this, what would they say?"

3. Scare People with Sincerity

  • don't sugar-coat the challenges
  • tell candidates it will be hard and you expect them to step up and grow
  • Say things like "we're fanatical about (insert your core values here)…we're so serious about it that if you're not, you're not going to like working here and we're not going to like working with you."
