Getting rejected by employers? Write a resume that hiring managers just can’t put down!

Did you know that over 75% of job applicants for a particular job opening fail because of issues with their resumes? When you are applying for the job of your dreams, you don’t want to be included in these statistics. You want to be among the other 25% of candidates whose resumes are just right to pass the initial screening.

Here’s how you can create a compelling resume that makes hiring managers want to call you for interviews:

Tailor your resume for each employer

If you have been following our articles, you may have seen this resume tip repeated a hundred times. We reiterate this because it is the most important resume tip you can ever know. Out of the many resumes we receive every week, only a handful are tailored to a particular job description. Start customizing your resume for a given job title by curating the skills, experiences, accomplishments, and other qualifications that you have related to the new role. Try to align all your skills and experiences with the requirements of the new job.

Enrich your resume with keywords

Keywords ensure that your resume stays relevant to the job description. They also make sure that your resume passes the ATS test. The easiest way for you to score higher on the ATS test is to incorporate the right keywords into your resume with the right frequency and context. First, print a copy of the job description you are applying for. Then, grab a highlighter and mark each keyword you see. These will be years of experience, certain skills, software, tools, etc. Compare the list of highlighted words with your skillset and add the common ones to your resume.

Place the key skills section optimally

The key skills section is where you display your biggest strengths on the resume. This section must have a special place on your resume where a potential employer can spot it easily when scanning the document. Place your key skills section toward the top half of the document and sprinkle as many keywords as possible on it. Use bullet points to highlight your skills. Simply list the skills in this section without elaborating on them. Once you create the career history of the resume, you can show the hiring manager how you have used each skill to achieve impressive results.

Narrate your career story through achievements

Consider your resume a compelling read that narrates the story of your career progression. Have you come a long way from where you first started in your career? Then, highlight your yellow brick road through the job market using your best achievements in each role. When you make a job entry in the work experience section, ensure that each entry carries the job title, name of the company, location, and relevant years. You can follow this information with 3-6 bullet points that highlight your professional achievements. If you are writing about older roles, only 2 or 3 bullet points will do the trick.
