Getting Ready: Are You?

Getting Ready: Are You?

Greatness begins in obscurity.

I love Emerson's essay The Natural History of the Intellect. In it, he critiques the hype that hurrahs potential prematurely, saying, “We have a juvenile love of smartness, of showy speech...any faculty that can be rapidly coined into money, and society seems to be in conspiracy to use every gift prematurely.” I agree with him now though I didn't before. But in an age of excess, it's easy to excite others interest. So I don't blame athletes for going pro early or reality shows for exploiting thwarted ambitions.

Some things, however, can't be hurried according to him. Yet he didn't have the Internet, Teleprompters or any of our modern advances and thus was forced to be patient and self-reliant. Contemporarily, moreover, literacy makes genius hard to judge. Combined with a sense of history (as opposed to real knowledge), it's easy to impress others. But that doesn't mean we should reject opportunities when they come.

It's up to the person to choose because only she knows her desire, which for most people is financial security. Yet what about our national destiny, who among citizens guard this? Why do we let haste hang so? Can’t we transcend provincial for wider peripheries? Or is it vain to imagine a success beyond ourselves? If so, how will we repay our parents sacrifice? How will we justify to history a truncated destiny, which some people fulfill cleverly and others escape nimbly? In our haste, we behave as if no prudent necessity is available to support and willing to sustain.

Seeing time as an afforded luxury, a treasured endowment or a best kept secret leads way to expel the true nature of intent and purpose of those hurried by ego, riches or benefit. When driven by humility and consciousness, where the greatest good is enhanced and strengthen based on sustained resources; where resiliency of value placed there becomes parallel to the effort and realization of time appreciated and ready when presented not merely taken in a rush to prevail.
