Getting Ready for The Future of Work in Nigeria.

If our solution is “send everyone to college” or “teach everyone to code,” we will fail. For a brighter #futureofwork, in 2020 we must create and open up alternative pathways:

? On-The-Job- Training: Many employers and hiring professional always state that a role required some years of experience and I am not against it. However, there are scenarios where candidates can be given a chance, maybe a probation period to see if candidate will pick up. For example, someone who has worked in the customer service department for years will easily pick up marketing skills, all that the person needs is a month or two on the job training. It is unkind to send away recent graduates based on the fact that they don't have the experience needed for a role, create a platform for them to get the experience.

? Boot Camps: This is necessary especially for technical roles. when I joined First Bank in 2010 as an IT HelpDesk Analyst, we had three weeks boot camp and it was impactful, we were sent to the branches for a month on the month training and that made a difference. Universities and higher institution should organize boot camps for their graduating students so as to have the feel of field experience.

? Apprenticeships: This is vital for engineering, artisans and technical role, transfer your knowledge to the coming generations, don't die with what you know. Make yourself a legend who will continue to live after demise.

We all need one another to make this happens. Employers and Hiring Professional should help us with this.
