Don't Just Wait for a Promotion

I fell into an opportunity that I rated as "above my pay grade".? This challenged my belief that a promotion would happen at a specific moment when I'd receive a full basket of items tied with a bow and a new business card.? I thought I had to just keep doing good work and wait. But I just got one of the items in the basket!? What if I could progressively get more and more items over time, and eventually have someone offer me a basket to put them in?? Now that approach to a promotion felt a lot more empowering!

What do you use for reflection?

When I was wondering what "living my best life" would look like, my logic brain wanted data.? So every day I jotted some bullet points.? I noted 3 ways the previous day had elements of my best life, and 3 ways it had, let's say, 'room for improvement'. Over a year later, I realized I felt consistently more peaceful, creative, and ambitious - without ever reviewing the data.? The value of the exercise wasn't in the specifics of what I wrote, but in the daily practice of observing and reflecting.? It's a simple gratitude journaling practice, with powerful outcomes.

My Bold Prediction for 2025

Here's my bold prediction for 2025 - and it's one that could change the way you think about your career.

?? The milestone: We're approaching five years of remote and hybrid work.

?? The observations: The leadership development that happened in hallway conversations, quick check-ins, and spontaneous opportunities has been on pause for five years. Employees who chose more flexibility, got less visibility. Managers who couldn't adapt, struggled to draw people back to the office.

?? The predicted effects: Remote workers will see colleagues who returned to the office pull ahead - not because they're more talented but because they're more visible. Managers who couldn't attract people back, will plateau in their careers. Companies will face a delayed wave of emerging leaders.

?? The choice: Professionals will have a critical choice to prioritize growth or risk falling behind.

?? The catch: You'll have to figure out what growth looks like for you, and take the lead.

?? The opportunity: The situation can ignite innovation for new, creative ways to nurture leadership. Those willing to invest in themselves and their teams will find new paths to success.

? The question: As you plan for 2025, how will you prioritize your career growth?
