Getting Out of Your Own Way

Recently, I have been asked to do a Leadership Keynote on Getting Out of Your Own Way. I gave it some thought. This is honestly the most profound and transcendent topic I could deliver, so I said yes. Here are my beginning thoughts:
You do not have the luxury of a negative thought - I couldn’t be more serious!
Every negative thought creates a neural chemical cocktail that streams throughout your body. This shuts down your body’s natural pharmacy of the good neural chemicals (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin) needed to keep a stable mood, be motivated, sleep well, have clarity, envision, and create a wonderful, meaningful future.
Every negative thought triggers an uncomfortable feeling inside of you, which you may have noticed elicits an emotion. Jealousy, anger, fear, worry, etc. These are some pretty powerful emotions. Remember, thoughts have power. Each time you think a negative thought, you pump the gas on a different neuro cocktail, sending yourself deeper into this abyss. These negative thoughts and feelings can entangle us for hours, days, weeks, or even years. This is what we call a downward spiral.
We can turn this around by understanding what to do when we have a negative thought or what to do when we feel entrapped by a negative feeling.
Negative thoughts are natural.
The brain is designed to survive. We all have a negativity bias because the brain is constantly assessing our surroundings to predict and mitigate threats to our existence. So, we can not get rid of negative thoughts altogether.
What you believe you create.
What do you believe? Use your imagination and wisdom, and for a minute (as if you were a child), allow yourself to think that everything is possible. When you use your imagination, you see the answer. Please sit down and write it down. No matter how far-fetched it may seem, write it down. Your ideas are the answers. Next, write down a list of things that can not happen. How do you feel?
