Do you find that as a leader, there are so many things demanding your focus that you never get done what you want to get done from your efforts? Do you find that your energy is not where it needs to be, and you're always running behind?
Well, stick with me because today, I want to start a conversation this month around your professional leadership which is about YOU getting results from your own efforts.
Hi, this is Grant Herbert, leadership and sustainable performance coach, and today I want to continue our conversation around the 9 crucial shifts by helping you get more done without burning out.
Over the last few weeks, we've been talking about your personal leadership which is all about leading yourself well. In a few weeks, we'll talk about people leadership, which is getting results through others. Today, our conversation will be about what you need to do, and the shifts you need to make, to get more from your own efforts despite all the other demands on your time.
There are 3 key shifts to make in this area.
The first shift is in your performance. The second is how you position yourself in the marketplace, your clients, and your career or industry. The third shift is in your productivity.
I'll unpack these shifts today and outline them, and in the coming weeks, we will delve deeper into each one. You'll learn strategies to help you get more done from your own efforts without burning out and have enough energy to be who you need to be in every area of your life.
Before we start, I want to debunk the myth of work-life balance. It doesn't exist and it never will. If that's something you're chasing, it's never going to happen. Work and life are not separate; work is a part of your life, and although it sometimes feels like it's the only thing in your life, it isn't your life. So, when we go through these 3 shifts in professional leadership, it's about you getting results and, more importantly, maintaining a level of balance throughout your entire life. Even the word balance has that connotation of being on the edge where you could tip either way at any point. But what we're talking about here is putting your work in the right perspective within your overall life.
Let's unpack these 3 shifts for you.
The first shift in performance is to shift from high performance to sustainable performance. High performance has been around for ages —in both cars and humans. But, just like a car, if you continue to run on the edge without proper care, you will eventually break down. High performance itself is not the problem. It's about ensuring you look after yourself and do things in a way you can sustain without burning out or consuming all your energy so you can go home at night and be who you need to be in every area of your life.
Starting next week, we'll explore this shift further, looking at how you can change your mindsets and behaviours so that your performance is sustainable and more effective.
The second shift is in positioning. Positioning is about how others see you. If you're running your practice, it includes how you position yourself in the marketplace to get clients. If you're employed, it's about positioning yourself within the firm, the industry, and the profession to realise your career plans. This shift is about moving from being invisible to being in demand.

When I talk about being in demand, I’m not referring to having heaps more people wanting your time. No. I am talking about the ability to make decisions around who you invest your energy with. It's about becoming a thought leader and authority in your field, distinguishing yourself from others where people only see you.
The third area we'll address is your productivity (that old chestnut).
How can you be more productive?
The first thing that you need to do is to shift your focus from time to outcomes.
If you're in professional services, I'm not talking about billing. What I'm talking about is realising that time is not something that you can manage. So, another myth that you’re going to get rid of is the myth of time management.
Whether you believe in God, mother nature or some other heavenly being that controls the time, you'll never control it. There are 24 hours in a day, and that's all you'll get.
So, this shift is about shifting to outcomes.
To do that, I'm going to take you through 3 particular things that you can manage that will help you to get more done with less, which are....
