Getting to Know You! Meet the CHR Staff

Phil Bryer, County House Research (CHR)’s Operations Manager, truly sets an example of authenticity, dedication, drive, and innovation.

"Phil is a copious leader. Proud to work with him," shares Barak.

Starting his CHR career back in late 2001, Phil spent his evenings teaming up with a friend of his to do part time request entry. After four years, Phil had an opportunity to pursue his passion of music and took it! Over the next few years, still doing his music, Phil supplemented his income and worked for another employer. Experiencing the stark contrast between what’s out there and the culture he had known at CHR, he decided to return in 2012. He’s never looked back.

Comparing the two cultures, Phil shares, “The other company lacked the attention or appreciation for employees and had a culture not productive and thriving….” vs “a company culture that cares about employees, keeping it a fun atmosphere. You feel like you’re doing something important (at CHR).”

Once described as CHR’s “fire hose” – if there was a “fire”, Phil put it out. Phil has taken on more and more responsibility over the years and grown with the company to where he is today, serving as an NAPBS Certified Provider and operations leader. Phil leads by example and oversees the day to day operations’ workflow, refining the processes and making sure all is streamlined and compliant. He enjoys keeping things “fresh, growing and moving forward”, working with a team and is unafraid of change or embracing new and more efficient ways of doing things.

"I enjoy going to work each day because I know that I get to be myself and have a team behind me that wants to help me succeed.”

Phil’s favorite thing about CHR? “Culture. I am grateful to have seen a bad culture regarding community and inclusion – CHR welcomes and appreciates everyone’s input. We all contribute to the collective to make the company better. Everybody has a voice. You don’t have to drag yourself out of bed because you’re dreading going into the office; I enjoy going to work each day because I know that I get to be myself and have a team behind me that wants to help me succeed.”

Born and raised by a single-mom in Philly, Phil credits his mom for teaching him the value of money and appreciating what you have – people, friendship, and mentorship. “I have her to thank for that; she’s awesome!” Music has been Phil’s passion since he was 13. Always in bands, Phil wants to affect his world by contributing music - creating something from nothing with a group of like-minded people. Even now, Phil continues to play music and refers to his current band as “Dadcore”, since it’s a bunch of guys that work but still want to make music and play a show “here or there”.

Phil describes himself as a “bit of nerd,” enjoying martial arts, pro wrestling, horror and kaiju movies (who doesn’t love Godzilla!?!), and of course his life-sized poster of Andre’ the Giant hanging on his office wall. Personal favorites? Heavy metal/punk music, MMA, boxing, training jiu-jitsu, Georges St-Pierre, Freddie Mercury & Queen, Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”, “The NeverEnding Story”, and the 9th round of the Arturo Gatti/Micky Ward fight. A special shout out and props to his girlfriend, for Phil becoming a “successfully converted cat lover” and “cat dad” of two.

Phil loves taking spontaneous road trip adventures to discover new “eateries” and will even hop in the car and jet over to D.C. for great BBQ, or to Frederick, MD for a vegan donut. Having a “crazy sweet tooth”, Phil’s favorite ice cream is Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy Caramel Almond Brittle and doesn’t have to venture far to indulge in one of downtown Philly’s Dottie’s Donuts.

Phil’s ultimate bucket list destination is Japan; he loves the Japanese culture and says that when he does get a chance to go, he knows enough Japanese to ask for the bathroom and get something to eat! “Sumimasen. Toire wa doko desu ka!”

"...there’s never a dull a moment unless you allow there to be dull moments.”

Future goals and dreams? Phil will continue with his music but is also very focused and determined to see CHR thrive and be everything it can be, loving the part he plays in making that happen. He intends to embrace life and “cram as much adventure as we can in a short period of time; there’s never a dull a moment unless you allow there to be dull moments.”
