Not Getting Interviews? Your Resume Isn't the Problem

I get SO MANY messages from frustrated job seekers asking how much I charge for a resume review.
95% of the time, when I take a peek at their resume, it looks great.
Their next question to me is: "If my resume is so great, why am I getting ghosted and rejected for every job I apply for??"
We are in the most insane job market I've ever witnessed, even worse than COVID, even worse than 2008.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims the unemployment rate is only 4% . But after I got laid off last August and filed for unemployment, I was ineligible because I received severance. There have been over 100,000 tech layoffs in the US this year already. A lot of these folks also got severance and aren't included in the unemployment rate.
I would bet that the unemployment rate is double what they're saying it is.
They're also saying there are 1.7 jobs for every job seeker. The problem is, that only a small portion of those are desirable roles with good pay. Job seekers right now are like seagulls on a beach fighting over a few pieces of pizza, when there are buckets of salad lying around. Nobody wants the salad, everyone wants the pizza.
Don't let the feds gaslight you into thinking this economy is great. It's not. It's in shambles.
And if you're a frustrated job seeker, you need to be doing more than just submitting your resume in a job application.
My new private mentorship group, Career Catalyst , has 54 awesome members already! My favorite moments have been when new members join, and finally realize all the things they should be doing to score interviews.
One of our members got 3 job offers in the same week using my techniques. I've heard of 2 competing offers before, but 3 was a new level of awesome.
I want you to stop and think for a moment. What would it mean for your life if you got 3 competing job offers in 1 week, and you got to pick your favorite?
This is incredibly, powerful stuff.
Another Career Catalyst member came to me feeling unemployable, having job searched for months with zero luck. 60 days after he joined my group, he got a job offer froma top tech company at 20% higher pay than his last job.
These are the kinds of transformations you can expect when you join Career Catalyst. But before you join, I want to make one thing clear: you must be willing to put in the work. You get to make these small changes I've laid out below. You get out of your job search what you put into it. If you're going to "sit on the sidelines" and just blindly apply to 10 jobs/day, don't bother joining. The most successful members of Career Catalyst are giving each job application what it deserves. They're getting interviews, and they're getting job offers.
Here are four things that my most successful job seekers are doing right now:
领英推荐
--> A loom intro video shows that you're 'hip with technology' and you're confident, creative, and innovative. It shows that you want the job and you're willing to do what the other 999 applicants won't. (If you're like, "What the heck is a loom intro video?", DM me and I'll send you an example video I made)
-->A project portfolio SHOWS your skills and experience in ways that a resume doesn't. Resumes TELL someone about your experience, but showing is so much more powerful than telling. Everyone has a resume! They all look the same. If you were a recruiter with 999 resumes in front of you, wouldn't you smile if you came across a beautiful, colorful project portfolio ? Definitely.
-->Strategic, consistent networking also sets you apart from the other 999 applicants who aren't sending messages to recruiters. I have a lot of recruiter friends who say they love receiving messages from an applicant. They say, "It shows the applicant is personable, interested, and motivated." All things they want in a future employee. When you join Career Catalyst, you'll get access to my Networking Scripts Workbook. I have come up with the wording for you, you just need to hit 'send'.
-->Finally LinkedIn : ) If you want to see what a fantastic LinkedIn profile looks like, check out mine :) Notice a few things. I have a custom profile banner that highlights what my purpose in life is. This image at the top of your profile is a huge billboard. Many of you are not using it effectively and you're wasting precious advertising space. I also have an impactful headline that tells people what problem I solve, and for whom. My 'About Me' section tells a compelling story that evokes an emotion in the reader. It was NOT written by Chat GPT. I have skills, images, and text under each job experience section. I have recommendations from previous co-workers and clients at the bottom. These recommendations are the Google Reviews of the job search world. I promise you when a recruiter reviews your job application and looks you up on LinkedIn, they're scrolling to the bottom to see what people have said about you. If you don't have anything, they can't assume working with you is that great, can they?
If you're reading this and feeling overwhelmed, I'm not going to tell you, "You're not alone". Maybe you are alone right now and you wish you had a supportive mentor and community that you could share your frustrations with, and your wins. That's where Career Catalyst comes in.
I know that any company would be so lucky to hire you. Let me help you polish the quality of your applications so you start getting the interviews and attention you deserve. What would it mean for you if you got a job offer in the next 30 days? I bet it would change your life.
This week (starting July 8) is LinkedIn Week in Career Catalyst. I'll show you how to get an all-star profile like mine. I'll show you how to network and leverage LinkedIn to stand out. I also have short tutorials on how to make a loom video and how to make a gorgeous project portfolio.
I know you can land these interviews, even if you feel 'unemployable' right now. Trust me, once you start implementing these small changes, see how your life transforms :)
