Getting Her Dream Job After Graduation
Scoring your first job after graduation is a big milestone, since it signifies your grand entrance into adulthood. Brenda entered Scoot with a bang after graduating from Temasek Polytechnic and has since embarked on many overseas adventures in exciting locations across Scoot’s global network! Let’s hear more from her.
We're curious about what you were studying in TP. Tell us more!
Before I joined Scoot, I was studying Retail Management in Temasek Polytechnic. It has never crossed my mind that my course would have relevance to the cabin crew role! I was proven wrong during my 2 months of training as we were taught how to use the Point of Sale cashier system, handle sale transactions and account for floats and sales money. This was necessary for all flights as passengers order food, purchase duty-free items or request for a seat upgrade all the time. It was advantageous to me as I had many hands-on experiences in handling sales during my studies. We had exams after the completion of each Scoot training module, and I was able to ace those classes!
Why did you become a Scootee?
Well, the glamorous and adventurous aspect of being a cabin crew attracted me, and I wanted to do it since I was a child! In addition to that, the fun-loving work culture here in Scoot is an added bonus. I love how Scoot is different from other corporate companies and even other airlines. We are always encouraged to be ourselves and have fun, even while working
How did you transition from being a student to a Scootee?
Scoot’s cabin crew training programme equipped us with the skills needed to be a certified cabin crew, such as how to prepare a cabin for flight, maintain safety and security, customer service, inflight emergency handling, operate the different aircraft types, and more. At the beginning, it was difficult since the new environment and work culture felt so foreign to me, and applying the skills I learnt on an actual flight took some adapting. For example, I felt that I could improve on my situational awareness and gain more experience on handling passengers. I have to thank my fellow crew mates and leaders for guiding me all the way from the start of this journey till now. They shared their experiences with me and guided me on how to handle different situations swiftly, all while upholding the highest level of service and without compromising on safety. I’ve not only learnt and grow as a Scootee, but also developed as a person.
That’s awesome! You must have met some challenges along the way, how did you overcome them?
I can still remember how I’d struggled through my initial training! We were given this huge SEP (Safety and Emergency Procedures) manual with over 600 pages and we had to study and learn it by heart. With little prior knowledge about the SEPs, it was definitely a big hurdle for me to overcome and I felt like giving up at that point. However, my trainers and batch mates were extremely motivating and encouraging, and we went through the toughest period and graduated together as a batch! That was the most rewarding moment for me.
How many Scootversaries have you celebrated with us? Any memorable experiences?
Just one, but I'm coming close to my 2 years mark with Scoot! The most memorable experience I had was when my dad and sister were my passengers on board a flight which I had duty on…it really made my day as I was able to see their faces as I walked down the cabin aisle. When I had to do the safety demonstration in front of them, my sister was giggling, and I had to maintain composure!
On another flight, I also met an adorable little ‘pilot’. He got really excited when his father bought him a miniature Scoot model airplane and he fixed it up in no time before he was walking around the cabin proudly with his toy!
Aww, that’s endearing, what about the coolest thing you’ve done onboard a flight?
We hosted and celebrated our very own “Scootoberfest” (aka the Scoot version of Oktoberfest) on a flight! One of our female crew was wearing a Dirndl, which is a traditional dress worn by Germans, and she instantly transformed into a Bavarian girl! Our passengers were all very amused by this!
Check out our very own Bavarian girl!
Out of all the Scootitude flights which you have been on, which is your favourite?
Ahh, there are too many to choose from! If I had to pick my favourite…it would be the flight whereby we planned and organised an activity to celebrate Singapore’s 53rd birthday in the air! We taught the passengers how to fold paper origami and they wrote their well wishes for Singapore on their masterpieces after. It was heartwarming to see everyone engaged in the activity, even though a lot of them were not Singaporeans. I felt so proud and happy for our nation!
Majulah, Singapura! (Onward, Singapore!)
That’s really lovely. What about your favourite Scoot places to fly to?
Hands down, gotta be Honolulu. It has always been my dream destination to fly to since I was a young girl, and I was able to visit this beautiful place 3 times during layovers, where we stay overnight for one or more days after operating the flight! I love how laid back the lifestyle is in Hawaii, glorious beaches, and not forgetting the stunning view after hiking up different trails. There are just too many wonderful activities to do in Hawaii! Although Scoot will be suspending services to Honolulu in June this year, I really appreciate the opportunity to fly with Scoot and visit such dream destinations, and am looking forward to the upcoming new launches for new adventures!
