Getting Go Auto's mobile app geared up.

Planning isn’t sexy. We know that. But without it, you’re flying blind. With Go Auto 's recent brand redesign, we needed to stop and plan before we could really start. In fact, that was the key to our success.

Go Auto is one of the largest automotive dealer networks in Canada. With over 50 dealerships and 25 brands, Go Auto’s customer-centric approach has made them a leader in their industry, both for customers and employees. They use innovative platforms and tools to make sure their customers get the best service possible—from finding a new car, to booking a service appointment, and everything in between.

Last summer, we officially launched Go Auto’s mobile app, and have continued working on regular updates and features. Recently, ahead of a major national advertising campaign with NHL star Connor McDavid, Go Auto decided to do a company-wide brand refresh that would impact their website and mobile app.

The Problem

The new design system was initially created for web. Instead of just plugging it in, we saw some opportunities to optimize it for mobile. But we needed to work fast.

The Solution

We had two constraints to work with: time and resources. This work was being added on top of other planned updates for the app, and needed to be completed in time for the campaign launch.

Our best use of time was to pause and make a plan. So we did.

Working in sprints, we rolled out the changes iteratively based on their impact.

  1. We conducted an audit of the current app to see which components we were already using.
  2. We prioritized the global changes that had the biggest impact and took the least amount of effort.
  3. We prioritized the most widely used screens, and those that had the highest impact in the app.
  4. We gradually implemented the remaining rebranded components and screens in stages until everything fit the new brand.

Working this way meant that the overall look and feel of the website and app appeared cohesive. And it allowed us to maintain our existing development schedule.?

The Outcome

We successfully merged the mobile and web design systems, and our client loved the work.

We continued to release features and functionality on a regular basis, while rolling out the new design system.

We delivered a high quality mobile user experience that felt consistent with the web experience.

And we were able to deliver a great product, even in the face of our constraints—because proper planning delivers great work.?

It might not be sexy, but it sure is powerful.
