What's your goal? The real one!
Some months ago, I wanted to do something impossible. Write an LI post that would have a million views. Then, 4288 was the highest number of views I had for a post. To achieve this, I had to learn and try new ways, and stick with it for months. OK, that is enticing. I commit.
Ten weeks later, on 30 July, I got my first six-figure post- 146,362 views.
After another eight weeks and some 30 plus posts, I could not improve on this.
Four weeks and 10 posts had gone by. Even worse, the number of viewers went down!
Was I discouraged? You bet. Need to re-think content - what do people want? People love great bosses. Not necessarily only a Beazo, Musk or Branson but someone who respected, valued and cared for people not only because they are talented but because they are human beings.
So on 18 Dec 2017, I posted a story about my boss who extended my wife and me an extraordinary kindness. I knew then that "this company will be the last one I will ever work for. And this boss will be the last one I will ever serve." After five days, this post hit a million views.

My first thought was "It's done."
My next thought was "What's next?"
Have you worked really, really hard for a goal, achieved it, and just as the euphoria of winning begins to fade, you realize it isn't the goal you are after? Hitting the million was very satisfying but what was most sensational is that 1.7 million people chose to read a post about my boss, the experience of working with him and the lessons I took away. And they did more than reading. They shared their desires, hopes, anger, inspiration, frustration, and joy about the work they do. And they told us their stories of the great and bad bosses they had served. And many tagged their past and present bosses and said thanks in various, different ways.
People were not only inspired by my story but reflected on it, learn from it and some even acted on it.
I discovered that one of my largest purposes is to learn, share and teach. This purpose has always accompanied me but I have taken it for granted, perhaps because I have been doing it for 40 years. I continue to coach and mentor - I do not accept payment, and while thanks are most welcome, they are not necessary. I do it because I want to.
Learn, Share, Teach.
Thanks for reading.
