Getting Dressed for a Job Interview
When going to a job interview, first impressions really count. Dress with confidence and style; be polished and professional. Here are some tips for you:
Find out what the dress code is. Ask what the dress code is when setting up the job interview. Look you can look like you fit in.
Be Conservative In what you choose to wear. If the job interview is at a formal office men should wear a suit and tie. Women can wear a suit, or, in most cases a skirt or dress pants and a collared shirt. In more formal industries such as law or finance, women should wear hosiery with skirts and tone down glittery make up and nail polish. If it is a casual office and jeans and t-shirts are worn, you should still do a more formal variation such as a collared shirt with a belt and nice jeans.
Wear clothes that fit. Don’t wear clothes that are too tight or too loose to the job interview. Both are inappropriate.
Don’t get sexy. The interview is not the time for showing skin. Cover cleavage and thighs. Skirts should be knee length or lower. If we can see up it, down it, or through it, it’s not for the interview. And remember, there is never an appropriate time to substitute leggings for pants. No lululemons.
Wear clean, polished and unscuffed shoes. Men: wear dress shoes. Women: wear nice shoes. Do not wear six-inch heels, or ballet flats or sandals.
Be well groomed. Shower, get a haircut if you need one. Clean beneath your fingernails and freshen your polish. Wear deodorant. Do not wear perfume. Brush your teeth. Wear clean clothes.
Wear black or blue. Black is a safe colour. It’s professional. Dark blue is also safe. Next best choices would be brown or grey or just stick with neutrals.
Wear clothing that looks like quality. Employers want to hire people who take pride in themselves. Quality clothes imply that you have money, having money implies that you are in demand, being in demand implies that you know what you’re doing.
Accessorize with something bold. Add a splash of colour or personality, tie, scarf, or piece of jewelry. It’s OK to have personality. You want to be memorable and stand out from the other candidates and adding a little statement can help with that. But don’t go overboard.
In a corporate environment don’t let too much show. The interview isn’t the time to showcase all your quirky fashion sensibilities. Save tattoos, nail art, and bedazzled vintage wear for the weekend.
