Getting better at it

How often have you being judged or do you make judgments about people on how they text or speak to you ?

?Communication skills and body language is talked about for the longest time- I remember listening about it in school, university, and?firms that I have?worked with.

?Until pandemic hit us – communicating was rather easy as the preferred or most used way to interact?was in-person interactions (atleast the important ones).?Most of the meetings at workplaces were in-person (remote was limited to a fewer set of jobs) or only if the geographical distances were non-negotiable.

?At the time when pandemic was picking up , it was also the time when we all flooded our lives with social media, sitting behind the screens and phones for a long time. What did this do to our capability to communicate ?

  1. Cocooned away of physical meetings
  2. Made us skilled writers or bloggers
  3. Making too much out of a few statements/images being posted on social media or networking sites

And today - post pandemic while we are gradually returning to normal, finding to fit ourselves in to this changed world – somewhere in the middle of hybrid, how are we evolving with relationship building :-

  1. Some are excellent communicators but not skilled writers – Do not just judge the book by its cover, make an attempt to speak, probe & efforts to understand perspectives
  2. Think thrice before responding – learn the difference between responding to the concern versus responding to the tone or way the email is drafted
  3. Focus on results from the recipient - Work towards being better & clear on what you have to say and what do you want as an outcome from the recipient
  4. It is ok to if articulating is not your natural style– use and learn from your peers, expression can be facial, mannerism also – we just got to hone it with the right intention

All around our day we meet or communicate with so many people and while it is not possible to observe how we come across or how we perceive others way of communicating with us - but yet how others speak to us impacts us in many ways.

Communication is a very important skill that can be learnt and mastered with the right intention.
