Getting the balance right

Conferences are the podium for sharing knowledge and breeding ground for innovative ideas. However recently I discovered how they can be a platform for dynamic change too. I am just back from Turkey where I went for some business meetings and a conference. My 6 year old accompanied me to the trip to take a dip in tech jargon.
I am no stranger to curious stares and raised eyebrows, that I encounter sometimes, when I tag my kid along for business. However, what was heartening and motivating to see was few other fellow scientists following suit on the second day. So we had a comfortable environment where kids took care of themselves (as they were old enough), while we managed our professional duties in the same building. From university/lab visits, individual meetings, to conference talks I ticked it all without comprising the productivity and professionalism.
There is no secret recipe or one-solution-fits-all approach on managing professional goals and personal life. Since I am often asked this question, all I want to say is that: do what makes your life easy without worrying about smugly smiles and outdated societal norms. My personal experience is that academic world is full of good people who will understand and support you in your journey. Just take the first step, spread the synergy and send out a message! If you have passion for your work, motivation to reach your goals and slight planning, you will find a way.
PS: Just a side note to people running kid-centric and friendly businesses, that conferences can be amazing opportunity for you to team up. You could teach new things to all those kids, showcase your products and even test your apps.

5 年Great story, which will hopefully be picked up by the larger 'conference' community.
