Getting back to work success

Pavarini McGovern is part of the Structure Tone group of Companies; one of the leading New York City construction firms actively working on the ever-changing NYC skyline. Structuretone:Pavarini McGovern

Every day is demanding to this team, supporting hundreds of construction workers and hundreds of projects on a deadline, every day starts early. The current project is located 30th and 5th Avenue, is home to Marble Collegiate Church, a true historical landmark. The expansion to the area site includes a school, offices and has an aggressive timeline to finish. Knowing the challenges of new construction and the requirement in preserving the Early Romanesque Revival Style, Pavarini McGovern was awarded this construction project.

Marble Collegiate Church

As one of the largest construction groups; Pavarini McGovern is Service and Safety oriented – keeping workers on the job and promoting safety in the work place; the overall culture is to support the project teams, and build it right the first time.

When COVID hit, construction halted. Everything stopped in its tracks. The experience of managing Schedules and being on time, became unattainable. No one knew when or how New York City would re-open. As the weeks ensued construction was deemed “essential” and all “essential” workers were able to report back to work. Starting with a smaller crew at first -with a new check in process. A Safety officer was on duty early am and now would check everyone in the morning with a temperature scan.

This was a required measure to assist in public and work safety and health, for the entire team. The officer utilized a classic handheld thermometer. Although this provided a needed health check, the check in process itself delayed construction; as the morning line up and check temp process took over an hour and a half, was not consistent at times, meaning multiple checks on same person and ended being a burden. By the time, the project team was underway, it was time for a lunch break. Any progress on the build schedule slipped as more workers came back and the early a.m. handheld temp check line took even longer.

How can we ensure all workers are checked for any Elevated Body Temperature and have a productive day? A temperature over 100.3 could mean COVID or similar infection it is important to keep both people and teams safe, it is a responsibility that is not taken lightly. However, taking 2 hours or more in the morning to have people cleared for work, made it difficult even begin planning the next construction phase.

Scott Slater and our team met virtually, and we introduced the SmartXcan. Built to the medical measurement standards, consistent measurements are achieved with a placement sensor to target the inner eye canthus for measuring and compliance under FDA adjunctive ruling ; it offers extremely fast thermal scan with an immediate go or no go result. The thermal Imaging technology was purposely made for this measurement. Removing glasses and ensuring a proper position; is how this smart device produces accurate immediate results.

Wearing a mask is does not hinder its performance as the scan looks at over 1000 points of facial data focused at the inner eye. This has been medically determined and accepted to be the best area for temperature measurement. The device is fully FDA registered and provides a quick assessment within seconds, detecting temperature levels to the Stanford medical standard.

Scanning in for work- SmartXcan Alternate E Source

Knowing the availability to power the device was limited- at a construction site- we provided a complete self-powered rolling kiosk with external LED indication for a quick indication. We delivered the SmartXcan kiosk to the site, and from the first morning, check in time was fast and reliable, the long morning line disappeared, construction resumed its’ hectic pace without morning delays.

Meeting again with Scott Slater several weeks later, he commented "so quick and easy”

The roll out Kiosk makes it portable and can be become permanent in a heartbeat. It has saved us so much time, and we know we are assisting our workers in overall safety. “

Since July the SmartXcan Kiosk has been in use for daily check in and has become an integral part of the construction team. Capable of accurately scanning up to 700 persons an hour as work teams come back to full capacity, the check-in flows with no delays.

This is a first in a series of how companies are going back to work safely, utilizing our smart sensor technology to assist in COVID measures.  We thank Scott for his comments.
