Getting back up after a workplace breakup

Are you facing the aftermath of a workplace breakup? ?A lot of us are, and let’s face it, there will be more joining this club.

The pain of no longer being needed by your employer can cut deep.

The journey to healing starts with acknowledging the trauma you experienced. Allow yourself to grieve and process the complicated emotions you will face. Acknowledge that it's normal to feel hurt, rejected, or lost. Take the time to heal, both mentally and emotionally.

This setback does not and will not define you or me or my little rock star self.

I want to talk about how this can hit a little different with my neurodivergent friends. I want to shed light on how this experience may differ for neurodivergent individuals.

Neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, or other neurodiverse conditions, often possess unique skills that can greatly benefit employers. However, they may face additional obstacles in the workplace that can lead to job loss. These challenges can include difficulties with communication, social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and executive functioning. These challenges can be amplified by something called Rejection Sensory Disorder (RSD). ?RSD is characterized by an intense fear of rejection or criticism, often leading to avoidance behaviors and difficulty in forming or maintaining relationships. It can include physical pain and mental anguish, it is not fun and It can have a significant impact on one's professional and personal life

As someone who has personally experienced RSD, I can attest to the challenges it presents.

If you have experienced this just know you are not alone, and these feelings will pass. Your strengths and unique perspectives are irreplaceable. Focus on you. Work to understand your strengths and the value you can provide. Educate yourself on how to be your own advocate and dig into your ideal work environments that will set you up for success.

Take some time and learn about how to ask for accommodations during the interview and focus on how you can be your best self.

Building trust again might feel daunting, but it is essential for moving forward. Start by reconnecting with your professional network. Reach out to colleagues, mentors, and friends who can offer support and guidance. Attend networking events, industry conferences, or even join online communities to expand your circle.

Consider this as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. But you must do the work. Explore different career paths, industries, or even entrepreneurship. Embrace change and step out of your comfort zone. You never know what new opportunities await.

Cultivate your resilience by focusing on your strengths and accomplishments. Take a moment to reflect on the skills and experience you bring to the table. Remember, you are more than where you work.

Remember, this is just a temporary setback in your career journey. Stay resilient, believe in yourself, and trust that the right opportunity will come your way. You've got this!

It's time to pick your rockstar self back up and conquer the job searching world once again.

Debbie , this is the most profound, moving , real post I have read in a long time. My own child fits into the many pockets you describe and more. They have been limited to employment opportunities from day one. Despite their amazing talents. Employers need to embrace the quality not quantity, an employee brings. My kid can only mangage some days 3-4 hours of intensive remote work. But Will seriously kick the office your 37.5 person a week. They just flew back from Ottawa today after meeting with Ministers Marci Ian and 3 of her staff discussing youth transgender rights in todays crazy climate. This is a kid, despite tremendous advisory , and honestly thought they were not going to graduate high school, due to absences, actually graduated 6 months ahead of schedule, with honours?? And a scholarship. A school that accepted the challenges and diversity of the students. They were appointed to the Human Roghts Tribunal, by the Government of Nunavut. Sat on both the youth and indigenous advisory councils of Kids Help Phone. Most recently as a youth advocace for UNICEF, which brought the to Ottawa. They have accomplished this and so much more, but I truly feel when they read your post, will inspire them to even do more!
