Business Buzz
What’s going on in the world of recruiting, careers, job/internship searches, employment, and layoffs.
Technological development, social change, and cultural shifts have all contributed to the growth of various industries throughout the U.S. Many of these industries have helped propel the economy back (at least partially) closer to pre-pandemic levels, and are projected to keep growing even as the pandemic comes to a close. Let’s take a look at 5 of these industries, many of which will require hundreds to even thousands of jobs to support them (hint hint).
?? Technology: the technology sector, unsurprisingly, is expected to grow well beyond the average of most industries (11% growth from 2019 to 2029). Many of these jobs are focused on cloud computing, which is the storing of big data.
??? Construction: as the demand for real estate accelerates country-wide, the need for civil engineers, contractors, and builders will continue to grow as well. With 4% growth expected within this decade, thousands of jobs will be produced within an already monumental industry.
? Non-Durable Manufacturing: non-durable commodities include those with a lifespan of fewer than three years, such as clothing, gasoline, and electricity. At nearly 5% of the entire National GDP, non-durable manufacturing will continue to remain a substantial component of job growth throughout the U.S.
?? Healthcare: At an expected 18% growth from 2016 to 2026, healthcare is clearly one of the fastest-growing industries in the U.S. Healthcare helped save the economy during the 2008 financial crisis, and will most certainly help contribute to post-pandemic recovery within the next few years.
??? Retail: Retail provides nearly 10% of all employment within the U.S., and the retail industry supports nearly 25% of all jobs within the U.S. From Amazon to eBay, as the retail industry continues to grow, so will the business/management side necessary to support them.
Why it matters
Even if you don’t want to work directly in any of these industries, it’s important to understand that many of these industries complement other industries/jobs. For example, as retail grows, so will the need for project managers and consultants to support these businesses. On The Final Round Podcast, we have interviewed dozens of Recruiters who discuss just how the growth of these industries impacts their recruitment and company culture.

* Question: How can I best prepare to land that interview?
--Michael W.
The best way to prepare is to prepare well in advance. Summer is a great time to unwind, and make sure you do that, however, putting in a few hours each week can really go a long way. A good way to stay on top of this is to treat it like a class - block off 2-3 hours in your calendar per week to focus on career development. This will help you stay committed to a time and prevent you from slacking off. Also, find an accountability buddy that can help you stay on track!
You should always start off by recognizing and jotting down the deadlines for your desired firms. This can give you a better sense of when you have to begin applying, and what applications/networking you should prioritize. Organize these in a spreadsheet to keep everything simple, smooth, and easy to read.
Once you’ve established dates, it’s important to begin networking. Applying to jobs alone won’t likely secure you that role, or even that initial interview. You have to learn to stand out. In Episode 10 of The Final Round Podcast, Madeline Mann (founder of Self-Made Millenial) discusses the importance of coffee chats throughout the recruitment process:
“Stop applying to jobs and just focus on the coffee chats, because that is ultimately what is most likely to land you the job.”
Coffee chats allow you to connect with professionals on a more personal level. Making connections and building relationships are what will make you memorable, and may even help land you a referral down the line.
