Why Subscribe to the Substack Edition of the Nonprofit Leader?

1) It is written for YOU

  • Those who are leveling up and want to rise to the occasion
  • You who work in mission-driven organizations
  • People who want to succeed at work AND thrive in all other areas of life

Leveling Up

I have a particular concern for the person who has skill and moxy. Because they often get thrown in the deep end early in their careers. Perhaps you were promoted quickly, or your business grew faster than you thought, or the Board chose you as the next CEO. You're no novice, but suddenly you are in charge of far more people, budget or mission than ever before.?You aren't scared, but you do feel the change and want to rise to the occasion.

Mission-Driven

Historically, that used to be a specific category called “nonprofit” or “NGO,” but increasingly, all ventures?(business, government, religion and education)?are taking the public good to heart. So you may work in a traditional nonprofit, a religious congregation, a socially-minded business or a government agency. Don't let the word "nonprofit" throw you off; this community has been built with you in mind. You dream big and are pushing to bring good things into being.

Whole Person

Humans are multifaceted and complex. Your work, social and home lives are not as bifurcated as some might suggest. This newsletter will touch on all aspects of the life of a leader because whole people are better human beings.?You want to be happy and growing in all of your life - sure you want to succeed, but not at the cost of those around you - or yourself. You want to run the race well and keep your friends, family and sanity intact.

2) It works. For the past 5 months I've been running a Beta Group of "under 40," nonprofit executive leaders. Here is their feedback:

“Working with Sam has been a fantastic experience. He has the ability to connect the granular to the big picture, helping me map out action plans that accomplish my personal and team related goals. He’s experienced, organized, and very encouraging.”

“Sam has introduced categories and ways of thinking I had not even considered. Now having learned and implemented them, I see that they are essential to being a competent leader”

3) I understand your world. I’m creating this community because I want you to thrive. When I was 35 I took over a failing congregation in a place not known for a strong Protestant community. I had a young family and the challenges of leading a turn around pushed me, my relationships and my faith to the brink. Slowly, things turned around, the church grew and when I left 16 years later, it was thriving.

I’m bringing you the resources that I wish I had when I was in your shoes - the mindsets, skills and systems that build strong, innovative and whole leaders.

4) You can expect every week:

  1. Monday morning delivery of a unique newsletter:?NOTE: a free version of the newsletter exists on LinkedIn where I experiment with content. But this Substack newsletter explores those findings more in depth.
  2. Coaching:?Substack subscribers can schedule free 30 minute one on one virtual appointments via Calendly link once you subscribe.
  3. Friday Round-up:?A weekly summary of media, articles, research and people who I’ve found helpful or inspiring.

What's the cost? $15/mo or $125/year. One coaching session alone pays for the annual subscription. Most younger leaders need coaching, but don't have the budget for it. The Nonprofit Newsletter subscription solves that problem. Included in your subscription is the ability to reach out and schedule time with an experienced coach when you most need it.
